I was just wondering if anyone has considered where they'll end up practicing after graduating from a UK university? Are you guys planning on staying in the UK or are you coming back to Canada? It seems it might be a hassle to get licensed to practice in Canada afterwords.

As much as I love Canada, I think I might stay in the UK. It just seems really stupid that Canada makes you do five years of rural service (as far as I know) when they're getting a doctor for free. Anyway, it does seem that you have to be a UK citizen to for sure be able to stay and get a job. I looked into it and you can apply to become a naturalized citizen after five years (there are some restrictions and stuff though) and it doesn't say anything about students, so I might apply if Canada doesn't change the rules.

Laura,
If you are going to be on a student visa, you might want to double-check with the Home Office regarding whether time in the UK under a student visa counts toward the requirement to be resident in the UK five years prior to citizenship (I think it does not, but I'm not sure). When I first moved to London I already had "indefinite leave to remain" (ie no visa restriction) through my partner, meaning the 5 year requirement started running immediately and I was able to become a UK citizen by the time I graduated from KCL. I believe that you do not have to be a UK citizen to progress after F2 training, but you would need to be free of visa restrictions (have indefinite leave to remain, which enables you to work without a visa).
Also, from what I have been reading scanning various boards, it appears that Canada has increased the number of Canadian med school spots, so going back to Canada might be even harder in the future (assuming residency spots are not adequately increased).

i agree with Jane, I believe student visa time does not count towards the 5 years otherwise everyone would do that, and the rule about being a citizen would be pointless. As for me, I have the option of staying (citizen) and I'll probably consider that becuase of the return of service crap.... I may try and do my USMLE's too and shoot for US

Most provinces (few exceptions) have a parallel stream for IMG's so an increase in canadian students would not affect us. what will affect us is the increase in canadians studying abroad which is huge now. For most IMG's coming back to Canada can't be plan A because the chances are very low and the competition intense.

Its a little late cause applications are in, but King's has a 4 year graduate program. St. Andrews will take Canadians without interview, and this year, King's has at least 5 Canadians on the program in the 5 year course, however, everyone I've met so far have degrees already from Canadian unis.
Hope that helps.Applicant 2009
