Uk student returning home
Hi,
I've got a bit of a tricky question. Any advice would be sweet. Heres the history.
1st Degree Uni of Manchester, 1st Class Honours, Top of year. Physiological Society Award for best Undergrad performance.
Offered Scholarship to undertake PhD in laboratory in Australia. Move to Australia with intent of coming back to UK with expertise learnt.
Fast forward 3 years. Still in Aus, just finishing PhD.
Apply to Med school. Receive offer.
Have to try and prove that I am still a home student, or pay through the nose. The med school has asked that I try and prove that my intent was to always return to the UK.
Anyone else had similar problems?
Thanks,
yyan
p.s. sorry if you've seen this message twice. Had it posted in med school admissions, but think it would be better of here. Thanks.

19-03-2006, 02:29 AM #3I was in a similar situation: British, degree from the U.K., and Ph.D. plus postdoc. in the U.S. (5 years total). I just contacted each school and filled out the appropriate paperwork. Since my stay in the U.S. was for educational purposes, I qualified (just!) for home student status at a few schools. It's best to contact each school directly.

Things to consider are:
contract - does it say that the job is short term or temp?
employer - are they british?
visa - do you have an absolute right to work in the foreign country (ie, in the USA do you have a green card) if not and you are on a different visa, that helps your case?
tax - have you continued uk tax or NI contributions?
home leave - how many times have you been home while you were abroad?
letter from boss - if you can get one saying you were hired for a certain period of time, that may help
jobs - have you just gone abroad to work for one employer or have you done several different jobs / contacts for different firms while abroad? the latter goes against you
voting right - did you stay on uk electoral register?
bank, driving licence - did you keep a UK account and drivers licence even when you were away.
It's all about proving you are 'temporarily absent' from the UK and would have remained in the UK were it not for the fact that you left temporarily to take a temporary job....
I really hope you work it out because it's a horrible feelingLast edited by MedisMark?; 23-03-2006 at 08:20 AM.
