Canadian student wanting to apply to Med school in Scotland
I am a Canadian student and I want to apply to either edinburgh or glasgow for med school. I am currently getting a BSc in med lab science, but from what I am reading it seems as though you go to these schools straight from highschool rather than get a undergraduate degree first like we do here. Can someone please help me and let me know if this is the case!!! thanks

Most medical students in the UK do come straight from school - the typical age of entry is 18. However, there are many students who have done either a degree first, or other things, and are therefore older (classed as "mature students" if aged 21 or over). We now have a number of graduate entry programmes too, but I'm not sure if these are open to international students.
I would suggest you contact Edinburgh and Glasgow to see what Canadian qualifications you will need.

Uk med schools
Edinburgh requires a 9,10,10 on the MCAT, which is a good score for many med schools in the US or Canada. In addition to, >3.4 GPA in a science major.
Do not rely on these GPA cutoffs that most universities give.
Kings London said all they needed was a 3.6 GPA.....but they kept my application until the UCAS deadline in May and then rejected me w/out any feedback.
The biggest error I made was not visiting any of the 4 med schools before I turned in my UCAS application. I wasn't impressed by 2 of the cities during my interview trip (doesn't include Dundee! ). My personal suggestion is that you try to organize a 1- 2 week trip and visit >5 med schools preferably on their open day sessions.
You should definitely look at Dundee. I have heard good things about this place and will soon be experiencing it for myself.
Good luck.

10-09-2005 07:29 PM #5Congrats on getting into Dundee! You'll get great training there. A prof I know on the faculty at Edinburgh told me that, in his job as an external examiner for Dundee, he has seen enough to believe that they now have a far superior medical training programme to Edinburgh....for what it's worth. I heard Edinburgh asks for 9,9,10 on the MCAT....but, like you say, that will definitely get you into several U.S. schools and probably even get into a few West coast Canadian schools and at Toronto if you have a strong research background. BTW, there are a couple of folks from Ohio in my class at Upstate Medical University in Syracuse.
