In response to the topic:

Quite right I say. You wouldn't want a thief looking after your mother would you?

I think the Q was not particularly relevant to this current case. I wouldn't let a burglar look after my mum, but this person is not a burglar. He was convicted of it, but I really doubt he'd do something like this ever again. He more than likely has learnt his lesson from this.

It's a shame he has had to change his career and steer away from his dream because of it. I can understand Imperial's point of view however, there are many applicants 'from the wrong side of the tracks' that do not have criminal convictions, and managed to behave themselves. That is just unfortunate for this particular person. He shouldn't have gone to the media, it just seems like attention seeking.

Pfft, it's worked though - Manchester are giving him a second chance. Interview followed by an FtP if they like him. Could have something to do with him forcing them to reveal notes about discriminating him for his background at the time they should not.

Academic first, then personal qualities, THEN health + background checks.

He's done well, I'm pleased for him.

i think Imperial should have not refused him. He's worked hard to get in like the rest of us, just because he did something wrong a long time ago shouldnt stop him doing what he wants. He knows its wrong and he paid the price for it. He should just be able to move on with his life.

i feel sorry for him. but im glad Manchester are reconsidering.

one can argue it both ways - if he once did something illegal knowingly, who's to say he may not again? imperial didn't want to take a risk in this case... but good for manchester for giving him another chance

Is 3 years a long time? I guess it is when you're 18, but in the real world it's hardly any time at all.
Anyway, as if it needed repeating, Imperial didn't withdraw his place because of what he did at 15 but because of what he did THIS YEAR - i.e. not be completely open about his past until the CRB forced his hand.
