Imp are gradually trying to snuff out undergraduate medicine and replace it with the american system of post graduate medicine. The rector himself said there was no future for undegraduate medicine at imp [Ref needed].
Its ok to have a grad course but not at the expense of med undergraduates. {/rant}

its coz they find that most 18 yr olds arent sure what they wanna do with the rest of their lives, and so doing a grad course only will decrease drop out rates. They will also be more mature when talking to patients etc etc. well thats what i think they think anyways.

in any case, no changes are gonna be made for at least the next couple of years. so nothin to worry bout

hmm well im not too worried about the increase in gep entry courses.. cos im 2nd year biochem student atm so i guess it more options for graduates ^.^

-- i was thinking it had something to do with a realistic approach and drop out rates too.. but having been to a recent open day (not one at ic though) they mentioned the drop out rate for med is actually surprisingly low, cos of the selective criteria they use to select candidates, making sure they only take in those suited to the course/uni/career.

- hmm does anyone know how many gep places they'll have.. ??

*edit: ok i was being stupid i found it at the end under selection criteria!

"Competition for places at the graduate course is expected to be fierce; we will interview around 120 candidates, with 50 students admitted in October 2008"

I totally understand where theyre coming from. When I originally didnt meet the conditions of my offer, I ended up doing Biomedical Science, which I have been doing for the last 2 years. Now - when I started, there were 55 people in my class, 35 of which were 'failed' if you like Medical School Applicants. How many of those 35 are going to be applying now in September you ask? Around 5 or 6....
and why?
at 17/18, a school leaver, what have you seen of the world? what do you know of whats available to you other than Medicine? nothing! Believe me, I'd be lying if I said I hadnt been tempted and taunted away from the idea of applying to Medicine with MSc / PhD prospects at my University but I know now for certain its what I want to do and 2/3 years later I'm ready to make the commitment, knowing what else is out there.

Hmm sorry about my late-night rant! Got my UKCAT tomorrow and im a bit nervous about it. Cant imagine it being difficult so I should be fine!.
Any comments / criticism always welcome!

At 18 I wanted to be a doctor... same at 16. But when I look back at how immature I was then... ick! So many kids at 18 don't know what they want to do, not really. More GEP's are good... so long at they aren't at the expense of us access to med students
