You also need to remember that more offers are made than places, so there may be 300 places but maybe about 600 offers made - so it's not quite as dire as it sounds. Even so, like Zaynab said... if you want to apply to medicine, you really do need to get used to those stats, because everywhere is that competitive. In fact, Imperial has better stats than others. I think Bristol got 4000 applicants this year for a similar number of places.
The best advice is to do as well as you possibly can. The grades mentioned before will be fine for Imperial - but generally the more A*s you have, the more secure you are. This is definitely the case for Birmingham, and remember the calibre of people applying to Oxbridge and Imperial. You need to give yourself the best chance, really.
