My opinion, based on previous experience!

duvet covers - yes
pots - yes
pans -yes
plates -yes
toaster? - no (if you live in hall, there will be a toaster)
sandwich maker - if you really can't live without it
kettle - no (see above)
alarm - yes!
laptop - yes
Shoes - would be helpful
Hairdryer + new cheapass straightners - yep
some clothes - better than going au naturelle

By the way, when do you guys find out which hall you're in?

Don't forget cutlery, oven gloves, tea towels, mugs, glases, ice cube tray, perhaps TV.

If you bring a TV, don't forget you need to buy your own TV licence. All halls have a TV room though, so it may not be worth it if you aren't too much of a TV addict (I barely watched TV in my first year - too busy!).

Armchair??!?! Seriously wouldn't bother - chances are there won't be space in your room anyway!

LOL an armchair? I never did trust the Guardian..

Also - must get good mobile phone network - one with some nice free minutes and texts

Question: Is there some sort of internet connection in all halls? And at the risk of sounding like a right dumbass, there is no direct phone line to each room is there?

ooh and halls are allocated to us in September I think..

another question: anyone thought about transport? Like whether they're gonna get some sort of railcard or annual pass or whatever?

An student transport card thing will only get you 1/3rd of weekly tickets, and you probably won't be travelling around that much. I'd just get an Oyster card (it's free) and then you can top it up as much as you like. You also get charged last year's fares (40p cheaper on buses and 20p cheaper on tubes)

Certainly agree. Get an Oyster for the first year and probably for the second year (depending on whether you find a place to live near the main teaching site).

Every room has an internet connection which you can register for in your first week here. I think it costs £30 for the whole year. Also you will have your own phone on the hall network which you can make outgoing and incoming calls from (and I think the call costs are pretty low). You can also call your friends in hall or any other college extension on these phones for free (using the 5-digit extension number).

Shop around for a good mobile deal. I know that there are usually some companies around at the Freshers Fair so you may be able to pick up a good deal there. I would try and find out what's on offer before the Fair so that you can compare the deals on offer with your pick of the high-street deals.
