I have a place at York and thinking of renting a place was wondering if anyone else was planning on doing the same.
I will be commuting back home on the weekends and thus need to have a car whilst at York and by staying at Halls, you will not be given a parking permit making it some what difficult.
Whats everyone else planning to do???
Ps, Im also a mature student I think thats 3 of us so far that I have seen on here
That's a nuisance re. the parking situation. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. I took it for granted that there wouldn't be a problem having a car - so many students seem to be car owners nowadays. I can envisage myself being away most weekends too, so have every intention of bringing my car with me.
You've got my mind ticking over about renting now.....hum perhaps that would be worth considering, although I really was planning staying on campus. Shucks. Don't know what to do to be honest. I am going to York tommorow funnily enough - for a campus tour as my interview was in Hull so have yet to see York uni. and halls etc. So will get back to you with more thoughts about renting ! Cheers
It will be nice to hear your findings Ace, like I said on my previous post, I was not impressed with the halls I saw back in December, but have no idea which block they were! (I've just had a bit of rant on another post before I read this one) I think I am going to look into the option of private accommodation too. Have you had any forms through yet guys?
Know what you mean about the campus now Smudger - never did want to go to a campus uni for the very reason of feeling 'caged in' and separated from the outside world. York it wasn't sooo bad - I felt like I was in a werid science fiction village - it didn't look anything like the photos in the prospectus or on their website - the lying hounds !!
Got to see the second highest standard accom in the Alcuin Halls, which is right by the HYMS building - a case of rolling out of bed at 9 and into a lecuture for 9:15....sweet. These rooms are fairly small and contain; single bed, desk, really compact ensuite shower room but they more than adequate. The price per week is approx £72, the next scale up are the superior standard rooms which are apparently pretty large and have an ensuite with bath for around £80 per week. Can't get over how expensive on campus accomdation is.
Still concerned about parking though, I did ask about provisions for students with cars and what I was told was quite vague and unsatisfactory. Basically, I was told that students are strongly discouraged from bringing their cars with them BUT there was a meeting taking place that day (Monday) and this matter is being discussed but what the outcome was is anybody's guess. A new car park is just being built - conveniently enough right by the HYMS building. The price quoted to me for annual parking permit was £25 - not bad, but whether we have a cat in 'ells chance of getting one - who knows . I was advised when completing the accommodation preferance form to state that I have a car and they would assess the matter then. No promises though.
I read an article no so long ago what factors contribute to people droppig out of their medical degrees, it was on the BMA website and the crux of it was, is that the first year drop out rate in medicine is actually quite high and there are some factors that contribute to this which are not down to personal problems. The findings were that if is a student lives on campus in the first year they are 40% more likely to stay the course and if they are over 19 and have stayed on campus that first year they are 80% more likely to complete the course. Of course, this 'research' may well be a big money making scam put out by universities though!
Despite my 'maturity' I am still terrified of feeling out of my my depth so really want to maximise my chances of getting into the 'swing of things' pronto and getting through the first year. I reckon opting to stay on campus this is crucial for me. But I want my car so I can make a quick gettaway if I feel like the aliens are coming to get me coz they live inside that big starship building thingy y'know....
Thanks for the very VERY useful info Ace, and glad I'm not the only one wanting the to keep the car purely for the quick escape back into Reality/The Comfort Zone! Like you I am terrified of making a panic-driven decision to drop out....I'm more fearful of that than any work they throw at me! I'm at that stage where I'm fearing the fear more than the venture itself, (which I'm really excited about!)
Yes I am hoping that too but it seems unlikely, although you're right possibly a lot of the people who land offers will end up declining.
I need to know soon as I will be arranging new plans for...
Argh! I was hoping it would be sooner as I don't really want my Barts interview and I know they have a waiting list, so would rather give it to someone else if I got a place at Soton. Seems like a...
No I agree, in mine it was the female interviewer who really seemed to look down on my experience and tried to show it in a negative light. I guess you're right it may have been to stress us but it...
