    For past/present interviewees

Does anyone know if they have a copy of your personal statement in front of them?

Also, what sort of topics are the cases you read before going into the interview based on? NHS? Ethical issues?

I was interviewed on the 28th, and to answer your question, no the interviewers haven't read your personal statement. They will know absolutely nothing about you aside from your name.

The topic we 28th people got given was some sort of article by an ethics lecturer ripped from the BMJ. In the hope i'm not breaking some unwritten rule (surely they have a different article for each date?), it's reproduced here:

Since that's the only example i've seen, I can't really say whether it's typical or not.

Well the interview starts with 'tell me about something from the article that interested you'. After that, their questions depend on what you start talking about, but expect 'what was the article about' too.

So do they give you the article before you enter the interview? or is the interviewer sitting there watching you while you read? that'd be akward as i am so slow in reading *sigh*

The article is tied to a chair (presumably to stop nervous interviewees cramming it in their pockets lol) outside the interview room. You get 10 minutes to read it while the person before you is finishing their interview. You get plenty of time to read it. I sped through it (nerves) then had time to go back, read it again and start thinking of what I was going to say abou it. Gives you a good way to open at least.

Haha, Thanks a lot for that! Tied to a chair?LMAO! I called up and they said that there are two people in the room a clinician and a lay person. What is the function of this lay person? o and what were the 7 other unrelated questions? were they from the interview question bank on their website? Thanks soooo much! Hopefully we'll both get in and I can return the favor!lol. Thanks again!

I doubt they will ask the same interview questions again lol, although all of us there on the same day got (I think) the same questions.

It's a really structured interview, you get 4 questions from each interviewer (follow-up questions intended to 'draw out' your answer dont count) and if I remember right most of mine were from the question bank. I remember 'best medical advance of the last century' and 'if you had one liver to transplant...' at least.

Each interviewer scores your answer (out of 5, i think) to each question, and thats basically it, no notes taken that I could see. So you don't have to worry about 'wore ugly tie - reject immediately' being scribbled in the margin :P

Seriously, don't sweat the HYMS interview. The interviewers are really friendly and the whole thing is over before you know it.

My interview in Toronto was pretty relaxed. Basically, there was no table between us, just 3 chairs in a room, and a table in the corner with cups and water jugs. They sit you down, the usual handshakes, and they give you some water. They will give you an article to read 10 minutes prior to the interview. One question about it will be asked. I was asked what was my opinion. Pretty simple. The next 7/8 questions were taken from the bank of questions that is on the HYMS website.

Each question is related to one of the 7 areas listed on the question bank. You may or may not get the same questions on the bank, 6/8 of mine were on the list.

The questions that they ask you will vary from day to day. So, it is best to know everything. I prepared by reading the CMAJ and the BMJ. Mostly the contemporary issue type. I also prepared points for each of the questions on the list that was provided.

No they will not have your PS.
