Graduates With A Firm Place at HYMS 09
Ey Up,
Im 23 and a Genetics graduate from Leeds Uni (back in '07) and i've (somehow) managed to get myself into HYMS this September.
I live in Leeds now with my wife & our little boy so moving to York is not gonna happen, but i've been in touch with the Uni and they'll let me base my studies at York.
It'll take me about 30mins-45mins everyday to commute, which isn't that bad (if you ignore the cost) but how realistic is it that I'll find parking everyday?
Speaking to the Uni: "The car parks don't get full until after 9am and they're empty until about 8:30" - Is this true?
Also how much is a parking pass?
Is there anyone else who already lives in/around Hull/York and is commuting?
Also when i came to the open day i was told that there are alot of good clubs in York for dance/pop music but what is York like for live bands?
If anyone has any HYMS Graduate specific queries feel free to post them here.
Cheers

The empty before 8.30 thing. It's probably not true of the main car park but the library/HYMS car park it might be. Trouble is, the campus is undergoing renovations at the moment so the other car parks tend to clog up fairly quickly. You'd find out by trial and error really. It may not be realistic for you to be able to find parking on campus every day, but if you don't mind a 10 minute walk or a 5 minute jog [approx], you could park further up university road in one of the housing estates and you'd be able to park without a problem.
Last time I paid - about 2 years ago - a parking permit was about £37 for the year, which isn't so bad. It may have gone up a little but it's not going to be in the hundreds of pounds or anything.
There are some fairly good live gigs in York. Clubs are a bit dire. Last I heard they were down to 2. When I started in '04, there were 4. So in '14, there may just be 1 if that trend continues! That's not counting 80s clubs etc.
HYMS I'm not too specific on, but I'm good to chat about York campus if you want to know anything.

Hey American Kid,
I wrote a letter to HYMS to get a place at York, because I live less than 25mi from York but more than that from Hull they said there would be no problem.
They got back in touch within about a week though.
Thanks Giella, for the parking advice.
I drove past lots of housing estates around the Uni when i came for my interview. So long as i can find somewhere to park I wouldn't mind the walk.
I noticed an 80's bar in York, a couple of weeks ago!
What are the bars/union like on York campus?
Thanks

There isn't a union as such. It sucks really. Vanbrugh college has probably the best bar, although Langwith renovated their bar right after I left into a new space, meant to act more like a student union bar I think.
Most people go down the Charles or the Deramore in Heslington in their first year. They're decent pubs, and they make up for anything lacking on campus.
I often got the feeling that York university was far more grown up than its students. As a mature, I think you'll fit right in!Last edited by giella; 02-06-2009 at 05:48 AM.
