    Hull-york 09

I thought I could make a thread for all those who are going to put HYMS down as their firm choice. Anything you are worried/excited about? And post questions here too, so hopefully undergrads there already could possibly answer them.

    Thanks and well done!

HYMS is my firm! I've withdrawn from everywhere else

Not really worried about much, other than I'm going to be 24 and haven't studied in quite a while, but I'm looking forward to it In fact, really excited and impossible to live with for my bounciness right now. Just need to get the money side of stuff sorted out now!
HYMS '10! Unfortunately have to take a gap year due to unforseen circumstances, but at least I still have my place!

If you get in at James or Alcuin or Langwith D block you can be one of the privileged people who take 17 showers a day just because they can. You get in anywhere else [with the possible exception of Halifax College] you'll inevitably be one of the people who lock themselves out of their room wearing nothing but a towel.
There have been cases of people sharing bedrooms at York but it's rare. More recently there have been problems of people being shipped out to the Holiday Inn for their first term, but it's unlikely.
Could end up at any one of these by 2010:
King's College London. That'd be for 5 years.
Hull or York. Again, this would be for half a decade.
Leeds. I imagine that it's not quite five years actually, but that's the general idea.
Cambridge. The idea here is that you spend three years and nine months becoming a doctor. That really is quite a bit less than 4 years.

Might even end up at Oxford. I threw in PPP as a long shot. I like Biology that much.

All colleges are self catered, with eating facilities which you can use. En-suites aren't actually any more, as far as I can remember, but they're rare enough that gappies and returning second years tend to be the lucky ones to get them.
I spent about £20 a week on food shopping, but the cost does go down if you share the cost of food with others in your block and cook communal meals instead of food for one. Most people do bulk buying at Tesco or Asda and get their food delivered, as those shops are out of the way. There is Somerfield nearby and a Costcutter which is ridiculously overpriced, though good for the convenience of being on campus and the offers that you can get each week.
You can buy a meal card at york, but you'll end up paying for meals you don't eat, so I wouldn't advise it.

thanks a lot for that! It says on their websites that about 1/3 of the rooms have en-suites, but guess must be taken up really quickly. How much do you pay for accomodation? Is it far from the actual university? How does the application for accomodation work then once you accept as firm (when is that?)

    thanks again!

Can't remember how much it is, although it's around 3k a year, at least when I was there. York is a campus based uni so everything's on campus. Having said that, some accommodation is located off-campus but those are connected to specific colleges. You can specify the college you'd like but there's no guarantee. Alcuin college is closest to the medical school itself and Van as well. Langwith was but then they removed a bridge, as I discovered to my unobservant surprise.
If you're not a gappie, you apply for accommodation after you get your results and you've confirmed your offer in August.

it's about £3000 for a non-ensuite, and about £3500 for an ensuite... you CAN ask for a specific college, but they really didn't seem to take much notice of the whole thing... x

How much can an F1 and an F2 doctor expect to earn, including things like overtime? I know they're on national training scales...but most earn on average quite a bit more don't they?

I'm curious to know so that I can work out how much I can afford to borrow whilst at uni.
