aaah, i wouldn't be too hopeful of getting alcuin; everyone puts it first, but only about 10 lucky people will get in... you get spread out across the colleges, but every college has its advantages and disadvantages, and no matter where you're placed, you will have some other medics with you too.

actually cant wait, got assigned to Hull!!!, thanks to this thread i'm going to apply for a house, Im so unbelievably excited i may wee!!!
Am i right in assuming that the Hull campus is the 'sporty' campus... Me and my friend both play cricket and football and he's off to Leeds Med school, i fancy a bit of competition with him in the medical school sports!

The only other ensuite area is James college, but it's quite far away from the med building... although, not as far as Halifax

Keezo...I took a look on the Website and nearly EVERY college has some ensuite rooms....So does any current medics know which are the newer, nicer colleges?.........
From the Website I was thinking the nicer colleges were:
-Alcuin (duh!)
-Halifax (thou far away)
-Vanburgh (looked a little older but had been updated)
-Goodricke...I had a Q about this one, is it all new? The website displayed an image as an artists impression...the website map makes Goodricke look pretty central....but the new part says it is located at Heslington East (not on map)....so is there an old part and a new part....or is it all new? and if so, where is it?!
Also, are there any cool cafe's/bars in the above 4?
Last, is Halifax really that far?!
We have plenty of time (accom is in August this year) but plz help!HYMS Class of 2014-Firm

James is the one you want, or Alcuin. Vanburgh has been refurbed and it is central, but they don't all have en-suite. It also has the best food. Alcuin has a fairly good bar/restaurant place, but I didn't go there often. It's med-school and library adjacent though. It's sometimes nicer to be on the central campus for some things.
Goodricke last time I checked was a dump. Many of the buildings were set up as temporary accommodations in the 60s and they're still there. They've been saying they're going to tear them down for years, but I don't know if it's happened. I certainly don't think it's been done over the past 8 months. Sports Hall adjacent but still a dump with a crap bar. You can look out the window and see the shining columns of James and think, some day...
Don't be fooled about the colleges having en-suite rooms. For instance, Langwith has them but only in 1 or 2 blocks and they get snapped up by live-in second years who get to choose and gap year students who get priority with their accommodation. If you get allocated to one of those colleges, you're unlikely to get put into the good rooms.
After 4 years at York, I still don't know where Halifax is. It's not on the central campus.
Hope that helps.Last edited by giella; 18-06-2009 at 08:56 PM.

I will contact the accomodation office to find out whats going on with Goodricke...
I guess James didn't look too bad, Ill add it to the bottom of the list..HYMS Class of 2014-Firm

James has the best accommodation. Trust me on that. No corridor shaped kitchens!
Internationals do get some preferential treatment, what with all the fees you're pouring into their coffers.
Pity you can't apply to Wentworth really. That's really the best of all of them.
