    What is Hull York like?

I'm sure there's been threads like this one before but I have an offer from HYMS and although I really liked it, I just wondered if any current students had any advice or info about what it's actually like there?

What is each campus like? I had my interview at Hull and it seemed ok but I guess you can't really get an idea of what it's like til you're there. And how is York? I'm worried that there's not much to do there, it seems to be more quiet than Hull.

How is the social side of things going to HYMS rather than a big university, is there still alot to do on campus and off?

I'm not worried about the teaching side of things too much as from what I've read, it really appeals to me. Thanks for any help!

York is lots of ducks, building work and evil black swans that trap you in the laundry room!
Having said that, York has the collegiate system which is more than just a halls of residence. You can play sport for your college, join the the JCR for your college and basically develop a real sense of loyalty to your college. Also, if you need it, they're able to provide you with short term accommodation as well, which is useful as a medical student.
York is probably quieter than Hull, but students there don't really find it a problem. York is a real community and the fact that there are only three nightclubs in town is taken in good spirit and fun. There's also a whole lot to do in and around York city and campus.
As a medical student though, you'll probably find that the campus you're assigned to doesn't really matter once you're in your later years, as you'll be flung all over the Yorkshire counties for placements. I have to admit I never met a single medical student in 4 years at York, and it's a small university with only 9000 students. Perhaps that was to do with the fact there's only 70 or so of them in my year, but they're just not there that much.
Anyway, in conclusion, York=nice campus, nice community. I don't know much about Hull. You already know about that one though.
Could end up at any one of these by 2010:
King's College London. That'd be for 5 years.
Hull or York. Again, this would be for half a decade.
Leeds. I imagine that it's not quite five years actually, but that's the general idea.
Cambridge. The idea here is that you spend three years and nine months becoming a doctor. That really is quite a bit less than 4 years.

Might even end up at Oxford. I threw in PPP as a long shot. I like Biology that much.

Basically, not much to add to what the person above has said, but I absolutely LOVE HYMS; because the year group is quite small, by the end of your first fortnight, you pretty much know everyone's names.

Going out isn't a problem; there's always a student night, and there are tons of bars, albeit not too many clubs, but when you're smashed, you're really not that bothered!! there are plenty of on campus events too, and if you're put in DERWENT then you'll have the most awesome Club D events. (i'm being a little biased: other colleges are good too, just not as awesome as Derwent is)

Unfortunately, I don't know much about Hull either, but I know the Hullies love it there!

ps I hate the swans too...

York city centre is lovely it's not that cheap for clothes (no Primark, quelle horreur!) but there are plenty of shops and stuff. There's no catered accommodation in York; there are places to buy cheap meals on campus, and the Charles pub down the road has meals for about £3... for food shopping, there's a costcutters on campus, and somerfields about 15 minutes walk away (which is way cheaper)

the accommodation varies; there are nicer ensuite colleges like James and Alcuin, which are generally of good quality, but a lot more expensive, or the cheaper non-ensuite ones like Langwith and Derwent which are a teensy bit scummy, but that's all part of the student experience and it means you'll have more booze money

Hull is fab and cheap. 1st year is great as you'll prob be in a student house along cranbrook or auckland ave and someone will always be having a house party. My house in 1st year was newly refurbished so I was lucky as everything was nice and new, had a good sized room and decent housemates those were the golden days! There's the uni nightclub asylum to go to, sugarmill and pozition the big nightclubs in town, welly which is nearby, adelphi club which is more grimey and alternative, Fusion bar near the uni is good fun. Loads of bars in town Mission, Soho, Vodka rev, the Mint...etc. Newland Ave near the uni has bars, cafes, tescos, sainburys, subway, coffee shops, a couple of boutiques and other shops its great if you just want a wander or to get a few essentials. Princes Ave a bit further down has classier bars and restaurants. Hull is cheap and you could be paying between £3-5 quid to get into places. In terms of HYMS, there is a bias towards hull when it comes to sport as most of HYMS sport is based in Hull eg. rugby, basketball, riding, cheerleading, football, squash, badminton...so all training sessions are basically in Hull which makes it hard for any Yorkies who wish to attend and get involved with the med school teams. It is not impossible though and you can always get in with the uni teams too. Shopping is varied as you've got St stephens shopping centre in town as well as princes quays and prospect. You have all the outdoor shops too like a big primark, lush, next, new look...theres just a lot of options for shopping you wont be disappointed. To get a good feel of Hull you need to have a good wallk around spend some time here, there are some really nice bits of it like old town and the marina bit. Visually the library is horrific I cant defend it but its well stocked. The business school building is gorgeous and rumour has it that that was meant to be the med school but the business school wanted it and took it for themselves and we had to have the loxley building. I like the uni campus its a shame I don't spend much time on it anymore but thats what happens when you get to 3rd year and you're not quite a proper student anymore. Basically Hull is like any other city it just has an industrial past so its a bit of an oddity but it is a fine place to live and be a student!
Well, he's kind of had it in for me ever since I accidentally ran over his dog. Actually, replace "accidentally" with "repeatedly," and replace "dog" with "son."

Bender: I'm very generous. What about that time I gave blood?
    Fry: Whose blood?
    Bender: Some guy's.
