Feedback from HYMS students on helpfulness of HYMS lecturers
Hi everyone. Just joined and am coming to HYMS soon. I have just finished my degree, and the main thing that was a pain at my present university was that the staff were dreadful in giving feedback from any work you handed in - e.g. how to improve it - where obvious errors were etc. It was just "this is your mark - no discussion. " I would be grateful if students already at HYMS could give their opinion as to whether the lecturers are helpful in giving extra help if you are lagging behind. Are they approachable if you want to go and discuss any problems you are having if you don't understand stuff. Have any of you present students at Hull or York had any experience of the lecturers being really helpful etc. etc. Also, how quick are they to give back marked essays, etc. Where I am now you could wait 3 or 4 months for a piece of work to come back after being marked, hence even if it was possible (which it never was) to discuss where you had gone wrong the big time gap didn't help at all. I just want to attend a University where the staff want to help and are prepared to put a little bit more time and effort in getting you on the right track if you are not coming up to scratch and where you can feel free to discuss topics with them if you are having any problems. If there are any current HYMS students with a moment to spare amongst your heavy work load and placements . Please give you opinions Thanks everso.

I'm not sure how to answer the orginal question really...
Because HYMS is PBL based and self-directed learning there isn't really much in the way of writing essays and handing in work. The only thing that is marked in the first 2 years is SSCs (I may be wrong, I can't remember!), and in my experience the tutors are helpful in feedback etc.
In the 3rd and 4th year, there's a deadline at the end of each block for written work to have been marked so there's never really a problem with getting work marked quickly if you hand it in in plenty of time. Again, most tutors seem to be helpful.
Hope this helps!Emily

no assignments? i think id like that. but i am no graduate so i would have benefited from the experience, ie writing skills etc. saying that i also think that helps u to save time for more focused studies. rather than spending hours writing essays.
