Taylor Court vs Houses
Im starting HYMS in Sept based at Hull as a mature student (apparently Im mature at 25..?!) and was wondering whether anyone could advise me whether I'd be better off in Student Houses or Taylor Court? I like the sound of Taylor Court as having my own en suite sounds nice, but a friend who's at Hull at the mo said she thought Taylor Court was mainly filled with International Students from other courses. Is this true? As I would have liked to be with some other medics. Any info would be appreciated! Thanx.

Hi there - i go to Hull, and Taylor court is indeed mainly (i'd say 99%) for international students studying all subjects. There may be some medics among them.

Thanks doc2bee! I've decided to go for the Student Houses. Just hope they've dried out by September!

I went to the open day today, i'd already done my form luckily i decided ensuite wasn't worth the extra £1000 and i'm so happy lol
Taylor court is nice there's no doubt about that but the ensuites are really small and the bedrooms quite small, then i saw student houses and i knew i'd made a good choice, as there is a lot more room. Rooms apparently are bigger if you go for the larger rooms and there's the kitchen diner so there's a bit more space. Only thing is the bathroom is pretty small for 5 people, but if everyone is on different courses it shouldn't be a big problem as everyone would have different timetablesMedicine 2007

hey suziola!
Did you visit premium and standard houses? Was just wondering whether there as a noticeable difference between them? I put premium large as my first choice as I was told some of the standard houses can be pretty rough!

When did everyone send off their forms? I had to ring and ask for one to be sent to me which was around mid june (20th ish)... the lady seem quite shocked i hadn't recieved it yet. And its apparently first come first serve basis, so wondering whether i sent it off quite late compared to the rest of you and how likley i'll get my first choice.

I sent mine off on 2nd july, but i only got my accommodation form around the 12th/13th so its only a week different. I know all other courses had their forms a lot earlier and some have been allocated as i know someone has been allocated their hall in the lawns. But that could just be lawns as we don't get allocated their unless you really want to. All i got told was send off early and when i said i'd done it, he said well you should be fine, but he couldn't guarantee premium large rooms. As in the house we were in it was like 1premium: 4 medium.
However the premium large rooms are ginormous(in my opinion) haha, double bed and could easily fit in atleast one more, mediums are still a really good size, i would still be happy with these, i'm thinking about whether i should maybe swap to premium medium as my first choice, but for the price i'm thinking i may aswell have the space
givmt - I only saw a premium house(it didn't surprise me they didn't tour the standards) the main difference i think is no washer or dryer, but also i think its older curtains, carpets etc. We got told they were doing up another row to premium over the summer so there should be more by september. But i did hear off some of the students the standard houses are pretty bad, and one hoped that i got a premium
so that didn't sound too promising. Lets all hope we get premium lol

Thanks Suziola! makes me feel better, i'm also hoping for a premium large, and like yourself wouldn't mind a medium either. Hopefully the standards arn't that bad, and i suppose if i do get a standard house, it'll just motivate me to spend more time at the med school/library lol!

hey, i'm a first year (soon to be second, got my results today
) and i lived in taylor court flats this year. student houses are defintely the way forward, no you don't get your own shower, but you do have more of a social living room, and you make better friends. premiums house are nice and the standards aren't too bad either for what you are paying, and they are doing a lot of work to the houses this summer anyway, so either way, you should be sorted!
