hey,
i live in york, and can honestly say its an awesome place to live - its a small city true, but not overwhelming like many other big cities! you will have something to do no doubt! its a nice place to live, ie relatively safe and quite picturesque if youre into all of that!
i got an offer from hyms, and am debating whether to accept or not! hope i helped you!

When i was at york for my interview, the only nearest supermarket within a few miles of campus was 'cost cutters' (on campus)... please someone tell me i'm wrong lol is there anything else close by e.g. asda/tesco's etc without too much public transport??

hey,
shops are good but leeds is better! we have the usual, eg topshop, h&m etc but leeds has got bigger and better stores and also has primark! hhmm, is it cheap? what do u mean? its a small city so travel isnt such major issue, and the bus links are pretty good! sorry, dont really know what u mean by that! and there are loadsa stuff to do outside york, leeds isnt far and that is the next major city i suppose! im not the best person to ask about nightlife, but my friends are out every weekend and they love it - too much if u ask me!!
and yes, we do have tescos, asda, etc etc!!! the costcutters is just for student convenience!!!
hope that helps!

I don't know anything about HYMS so it's probably not my place to butt in. But just thought I'd add, I thought Manchester was my fourth choice until I actually visited and realised what an amazing uni it is. And it seems everyone believes their own uni is the best once they get there anyway...
All the best!GKT First Year

I am in a similar position to you, with a single offer at HYMS. I never consisdered applying until I had to go to York for a dyslexia test and dropped in to the medical school to ask about mature students at HYMS. They were so open and friendly and made time to talk with me that I threw the Warwick GEP course off my wish list to put HYMS in instead. I think that the students we meet will make or break our time at HYMS. Heres hoping they will be fun, kind and that we will have time to make some new friends as well as study.

The negatives I can say about York is that it's quite expensive, and so attracts a certain class of student. The campus is collegiate, so has no real "centre". That said, it's a safe and easygoing city. Hull is more of your traditional uni, is cheap and cheerful, students more laid back. It really depends on who you are and what you'd prefer.
But if you go to HYMS you get to move round anyway after the first two years.
Good luck with your choice, there are others out here who through circumstances had to pick uni's that weren't initially what we wanted.
