question for current students about books etc

hello! i'll be coming to HYMS in September and I was wondering if any current students there could give me a bit of advice...

I am a graduate (finishing my music degree), i did Biology and Chemistry A Levels 5 yrs ago (have forgotten most of it all now), so I was wondering what i should relearn so that i'm not behind when I join?

Are there any books you can recommend reading before starting the course? what books will i be using in 1st term?

    cheers

    Hannah

    Hi Hannah,
    Congrats on the offer!
I'll give you the same advice I was given this time last year!
Don't worry about doing too much over the summer.... have some time off and earn some money (it's expensive as a grad!!!!)
As for books, Principles of anatomy and physiology by G. Tortora is probably the book that I and many others use the most... Keep an eye out on amazon and ebay for cheap copies... you don't need the most recent edition - I have a 10th ed that I picked up fro £15 in a 2nd hand book shop! Having said that, I would have a look at a few different books, as different people have different favourites. Tortora is very user friendly with lots of good pictures and diagrams, but can be quite basic. Some people prefer Medical Physiology by Guyton and Hall, but it's not as user friendly - I have a copy from the library that I use occasionally.
I wouldn't buy lots of books before you come... It's better to have a look at the ones that you like and get on with in the library when you get here, cos they're not cheap!!!
If you want to know more then let me know!
What campus have you been allocated?

    hi Sarah!

thanks for the advice, i might well get the odd book before, ooooh i'm feeling all enthusiastic, hehehe! So you don't think i need to relearn my A level biology and chemistry before i go? urgh, organic chemistry.... is the first term a bit of a recap on things covered in A Levels?

I haven't been told yet where i'm going to be based - when did you find out? I'm hoping that as my offer is unconditional, I'll find out soon...

anatomy - I'd say go for Moore Dalley Clinical Anatomy (lots of detail), or Grays anatomy for students (lots of CGI and much simpler and easier to understand than moore).

physiology - Guyton or Vanders - guyton is bigger, vanders is more graphical.

tortora is descent, you should buy it. very useful. rest of the books that you need, you can always borrow from library. always a good idea to revise before you come, will save you a lot of time.

U.S. journalists I don't think are very courageous. They tend to go along with the government's policy domestically and internationally. To question is seen as being unpatriotic, or potentially subversive.- Robert Fisk

If anything at all, some basic cell biology - although the first four weeks is spent going through the basics again. Don't worry about the chemistry, we hardly touch on biochemistry. If anything I would go through some basic anatomy.
