    Hull or York?

hey, i''ve just had a phone call from the admissions officer asking me if i would like to change to york from hull. i have an unconditional offer and originally prefered york. it came as a shock but now am not sure whether i want to change.

any advice as to what people prefer with regards to facilities, accomadation (i have a student house allocated in hull) and sports etc, from people already at hull or york would be really appreciated!

    cheers, Adam

I can't claim to know much about the universities, but I do know both of the cities very well, I have friends living in both.

Transport wise, York is much better connected. You have regular trains going south to Leeds (from where you can get an onwards connection to almost anywhere), and you're on the east coast mainline (which stretches from London up to Edinburgh). Hull is not quite so well connected - you're an hour from Leeds, and the trains aren't very regular, and you're not on any kind of main intercity trainline. Both the universities are a little way out of their respective city centres, but there are regular bus services (every 10-20 mins)

Hull city centre is probably slightly bigger than York's, and you have alot more well known shops (there are 2 shopping centres and a large city centre pedestrian friendly area with plenty of shops). York city centre is slightly smaller and has more traditional family run shops, and also quite a few more touristy shops.

Will edit if I think of more!

It depends i mean im slightly biased as i was based in hull for the last 2 years , and hull was officialy voted the friendliest university in the country .. from experience hull is actually closer to town then the campus in york, and i think in my opinion the campus is much nicer, especially the med school part its nice and quiet as its a new part of the uni.

Im not sure on accomodation but i think if you went to york it would be more a halls style were your in house of 4/5 if you come to hull.

Hull may be more out of the way but personally ive not found a problem with travel , trains are direct to london, there are good links between york ... and if your doing amedical degree you wont have much time to be up and down the country anyway ! there are medics from bournemouth all the way upto glasgow who are in hull.

I would say York city centre is perhaps more attractive but more tourist orientated.
Hull is currently going through a regeneration.

Eveything in Hull seems to be cheeper, even accomodation is bout 45 in hull and nearer 60 pw in york ...

but as i said im biased:P

Hull all the way. It cheaper and from what i have heard the uni has a really active unions, socities and sport clubs. Just remember that whichever you choose you still get the opportunity to live in the other city when your on placement from year 3 onwards. Also i reckon uni is all about what you make it so i'm sure you will have a great time where ever you end up.

just wondering when adam and jpc found out that you had been alocated accomodation as i have firm place and have now met the requirements but haven't heard anything. Also haven't had any confirmation from HYMS that i've met the requirements only a letter from UCAS so i hope i'm definately in. I'm sure it's all fine just a little concerned

Id get in touch with HYMS as all people with firm acceptance of HYMS should know campus allocation. If you were insuarance, you will find out after conformation of grades.

so HYMS know your comming then?

they have to convert you from conditional to unconditional which according to the office takes time.

then once the uni know your going to take up your place they will alocate you a place, whether you have chosen halls or a house which i hear loads of new medics have done.

then they will send you a contract and thats it.. all ready now unil you move in

are you a graduate or A level student?
