US student doing an elective at GKT

Hi, all. I'm a final year medical student from the US who will be starting a general surgery elective at GKT shortly. I feel completely unprepared in terms of the medical culture and what role a medical student has within the UK helath system. I would really appreciate any insight you all may have to share!

Specifically:
1. What kind of call schedule and overnight requirements are generally expected? What time do you usually arrive and leave? I'm at the Denmark Hill location if that helps. My boyfriend and I are looking to take some weekend trips if it's possible and so are trying to plan accordingly.

2. What role does the medical student have on the team? Do you get to participate in the surgery or stay on the ward as a student? Any suggestions for how to prepare and/or books to read?

3. Just logistically, our visiting students generally wear the scrubs and white coats of our own hospitals--they aren't allowed to wear their own. Should I bring my own or expect to use ones provided?

Thanks so much for any help! I'm so looking forward to this experience!

Hey....

So i see you've written this message months ago, so i'm not sure this is still relevant, but for the sake of it - i'll give my 2 pence worth.

Basically, 1 and 2 - can't help you there, coz I haven't reached that stage myself yet. However, in terms of white coats and scrubs - as far as I know, I read quite recently, "No to a white coat - out now as carriers of infectious agents." So no more white coats, scrubs then, and I assume this will be provided for you by the hospital. And if they refuse to provide you scrubs and you don't want to buy your own, find a friendly f1 or f2 doctor and ask them to let you in to the changing room and borrow a couple.

I hope you enjoy your time at GKT!!
