    Question Ukcat - undergraduate entry

    hey guys
i just did my ukcat recently and got an average of 670.
now i know that this is above the average of 600 but i've heard that Kings rank students in order of ukcat score for selection for interview and ive also heard of a lot of people getting a score of 700+.
this has got me a bit worried so i was wondering whether it would be worth me applying to kings with this score or is it likely that i wouldnt qualify for an interview because of this.
i ahve quite a good academic profile etc but am just worried that my ukcat score will really affect my application as kings seem to place quite a lot of emphasis on it.
any advice would be very much appreciated and itd also be good to hear from students who have been offered a place at kings for 08 entry and see what ukcat score you had

EDIT: Oh sorry I've just realised that the thread below is quite similar to mine! but it would still be good to hear from students who have been offered a place at kings for 08 entry and see what ukcat score you had!

Do you want to apply for GPEP or 5 year mbbs course?

I can tell you that I averaged 633 on my UKCAT last year and I will be starting the 5 year mbbs course in september.

I think you don't have anything to worry about in regards to your ukcat score... just try and get the rest of your application up to scratch i.e your personal statement as this is what really counts.

Happy graduate! Currently a GKT 2nd year medic

Thanks for your reply Frodo - its made me feel more optimistic
Im hoping to apply for the 5 yr mbbs course and yes i agree that its the personal statement that really counts. im actually working on that on the moment but its just that Kings seems to place quite high emphasis on ukcat score compared to some other ukcat universities.

    hi!
I don't think you have anything to worry about tbh. I think that kings will take everything into consideration when deciding whether to interview you or not. I don't think the ukcat has anymore bearing than your academic profile.I would say do apply, you have four places that you can apply to, so it would be worth it. If kings do turn you down then you will still have 3 others left!670 isn't a bad score anyway, like you say, its above average. Also yes you do see a lot of people, especially on this site, who achieved very highly in the ukcat, however I think that the reason you see soo many people with high scores is because those people that don't score as highly as they would have liked tend not to post their result on here. I am off to kings in 2 weeks to start the course and I got something like 760.. as an average in my ukcat lats year. BUT someone else I have spoken to who is also starting in two weeks only got 630! So it really isn't a big factor!
    Good luck with your application!

hey, 670 is a great score.. as long as you got above 600 you should be fine.. my average was around 680, similar score to yours.

I got in last year with a UKCAT average of 675 and a rubbish personal statement so I'd say it's definitely possible!

I got an offer with a UKCAT of 650 average. After speaking to Kings admissions tutors, and judging on the people I know who got in, and those that got rejected, I get the impression that GCSE and UKCAT score are the two most important factors in selection for interview, with respect to GCSE specifically I think they look at the number of A*s that you have.

I know they go on and on about how they look at every part of your application but I know somebody who had hardly and work experience, he had a UKCAT of 700+ and 12A* and got in, a friend of mine who had a really excellent application in every other way but a UKCAT of around 610 and 5A* at GCSE got rejected without interview quite quickly.

When I spoke to them before applying they told me that if you have more A*s, you don’t need to do so well in UKCAT, if you do really well in your UKCAT, your GCSE’s can afford to be not so good.

Other people may disagree with this, I am just talking based on the people I know, and also the impression I got when speaking to them over the phone.

I had 8A* and UKCAT of 650 and scraped in at the very end of the selection process. 670 is a pretty high UKCAT score though, so if your GCSE’s are good, you should definitely have a good shot.

Hope that helps, my apologies for the essay

Thanks for the valuable insight, Jacob
I didn't think they placed that much emphasis on GCSE's although i had heard about ukcat score being pretty high up on their list.
But i'm glad to hear that as I have 10 A* and 1A at GCSE so I'm hoping this will make up for my not-so-spectacular ukcat score.
I think i'll definitely have a bash at King's and see what comes of it!

With 10A* and a ukcat of 670 I would say you definitely have a good chance. Good luck!

P.S if you don’t mind my nosiness, where else are you thinking of applying?
