Is it harder to get into Kings than Oxbridge?
Hi,
It had never occured to me that this could be possible, until today. I know Oxbridge has strict requirments (and 4 interviews
) but I also know that Kings has 5X more applicants. Kings generally has 5000 + people apply (they only interview a fraction of this) while Oxbridge has about 1000 + applicants. So should I be more worried about getting into Kings, than Oxbridge?
What is a typical offer, and what carries the most weight.
Regards.

As far as GEP offers go, they are all 2:1 (except birmingham which is up it's own arse) and kings get's 61.5 applicant per place, oxford has about 8.
However, Kings is open to anyone with a degree, Oxford only allows physical / applied science applicants.
So Oxford is more selective than kings.
I know someone who got an Oxford interview but not a Kings one. So as far as that goes, Kings is harder to get an interview from.Last edited by Arch_Angel; 11-07-2008 at 09:50 PM.

Well I applied as a graduate to both, I got into Oxford straight off the bat for the graduate course. Kings I got rejected from the 4 year, put onto the 5 year, then when I accepted that, bumped back up to the 4 year course. My boyfriend got straight into the Cambridge GEP medicine course, but was rejected post-interview by Kings GPEP.
So in my experience, Kings is harder to get into then Oxbridge. However don't let that lull you into thinking its easy to waltz into Oxbridge. The reason there are fewer applicants that is probably because a lot of people self-select against going for Oxbridge (when they probably actually have a shot) because they think they won't get in. So all the candidates you are up against generally have very good grades, good personal statements, good work experience etc. You just need to open any newspaper around about January time to read articles about how X or Y journalist's child was cruelly rejected from oxbridge despite having 9 million A*s, having volunteered since the age of 3 and captaining every sports team whilst walking backwards to the North Pole.
I don't know what the case is for Kings undergrad, but the grad interviews are done *blind*- i.e. they can't see your personal statement, grades or UKCAT score. That I reckon makes the interview process harder. At least at Oxbridge interviews, if you screw up, you can hope they will take into consideration what they already know about you and maybe be lenient. Kings interviews level the playing field- however that makes the interview more hard work!Oxford GEP- offer- declined
Kings GEP- 5 year offer instead, accepted, now bumped to GPEP
QMUL GEP- Interview, then rejection
Southampton GEP- good old fashioned rejection
UKCAT- 744 (783 with AR)

I suggest you contact the admissions departments for all three, I was an access student and did this so my entry was slightly different but I was advised by Cambridge and Kings to apply, and advised not to by Oxford. I personally found the admissions staff at Cambridge very approachable and their feedback (rejected after interview) was realy helpful when I got to the Kings interview. Just remember that Kings require the UKCAT where as Oxbridge require the BMAT.
