Pharmacology.. How about you? I'm so excited about getting a place but worried all this continuous education will be overwhelming. Do you think you'll be making this your first choice?

    It's definitely my 1st choice

Have you ideas about how you're gonna fund it? I'm trying to research various avenues at the minute.

    Where are you from?

Sorry if it's not too structured but I'm doing two things at once here Here's some ideas that may be of use:

Where can I get help with funding for my medical degree?
The GMC has no role to play in the provision of financial assistance to those involved in medical education. Some schools offer financial support schemes and information should be sought from the medical school directly. The following organisations may also be of help:
    • Department for Children, Schools and Families (external website)
    • National Union of Students (external website)
The British Medical Association Charities Office has information about the awards and grants for mature and second degree medical students. The contact details are:
    Email - info.bmacharities@bma.org.uk
    Telephone - 020 7383 6142

    -----

You also can go to your local library and search for charity trusts/funds that will give you a grant towards your studies e.g. funder finder. These normally are not advertised in the paper etc. due to certain restrictions on charitable organisations and their funding. You need to find them; they don't advertise.

    ----

You also have the old student loan route. The closest thing to 'good debt' you're going to get due to the low interest rates. Don't underestimate this.

    ----

Glasgow university offer certain loans/grants for students facing financial hardship. These are part-funded by the university and part by the government. There is support if shit hits the fan during your studies.

    ----

In first year you do have time for part-time work.

    ---

You have an interest free over-draft and can work in Summer. As a medic you can get the likes of phlebotomy jobs that pay reasonably well.

    ----

Do what I've done and take on the most well-paid job you can find, regardless of how poor the conditions and work work work to save up some to limit later damage.

    ---

If you are a Scottish student, you may be unaware of this but SAAS will pay the difference in fees from when you first went to uni to the going rate to 2010 e.g. In 2010 it is ~£2,800 a year but in 2005 it was around £1,250 a year. You would be paying the 2005 rate, not the 2010 rate.

    ---

I know of medical students that have opted for taking part in experimentation to make money (a friend of mine had muscle samples surgically removed from his abdomen). Clearly, you need to look into these on a case by case basis as always carry risks. But pay well. I'm not sure I support this. Use your brain here.

    ----

Finally, there's always the option of unsecured lending from the bank. I believe the BMA give advice on this. As a medical student you are pretty much guaranteed a job (99-100%). Your bank will be happy to grant you a career development loan which is payable upon completion of your degree. But take heed, they are looking for profit. Compound interest = bad. However, you do not pay any interest whilst studying, the government pay this and this will let you borrow up to ~£10,000. Doctors also get paid handsomely. Once again, think this one through. There's two sides to this.

That's a few wee ideas. I'll get back to you if I can think of any more. Hope that is some kind of help :S

    That's some great info!

I've been searching for a few weeks so I'm gonna start making some calls this week. I think the above may apply to all UK students who study Medicine in Scotland. I need to phone the SAAS to confirm.

At least, I hope it does! Every little helps and that would be a great big help.

I have an unconditional offer from Glasgow (subject to satisfactory health and Disclosure checks) and a 'conditional' from Manchester (just the health and CRB checks) so essentially I have my choice of either course for September.

    Glasgow or Manchester....???????

    Thoughts?
