Riding a Bike in Glasgow
I'm currently studying chemistry at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow and hold an offer to study medicine at Glasgow University.
To those of you who are moving to Glasgow in September I would like to urge you to make cycling your primary mode of transport. Glasgow is a great city to cycle around and you'll see so much more than if you take the bus or, heaven forbid, the subway.
I run a forum dedicated to fixed-gear and single-speed cycling in Glasgow which you can view here. The people there will be more than happy to answer any queries you might have about cycling in Glasgow.2009 Entry:

Hi Andrew,
I, like yourself, are in the same boat (except swap Edinburgh for Aberdeen). I'm currently in Dundee, and I also cycle everywhere, It was good to see at the fornt entrance of Wolfson a load of cycle locks. Not too sure about the security, but definitely up for more cycling next year, can't wait!

This is good to know, I won't have a car and will probably end up living outside walking distance (flats are not cheap!) so I was hoping I'd be able to bike around!
Andrew, where are you planning to live? Are there any relatively cheap flats nearby? I'm hoping to buy one if I can get a good deal while the market's low rather than throwing money down the toilet on rent.

Oh thats good to hear!
I just have a problem of having quite an expensive bike (a GT avalanche 2.0 Disc with a cane creek thudbuster post), although ive replaced the wheel bolts with security bolts and put a seat post lock on it i still worry about it. How have you found glasgow for bike theft?Glasgow 2nd Year Medic

Quite bad, for bike theft and theft in general. I had my bike stolen outside my flat despite having it locked (on the front wheel...) and the seat taken inside. Get a decent lock which covers both the wheels and the frame. Take in inside at night too if you can.
Might sound a bit dramatic and I wouldn't consider not coming to glasgow simply because of all of this (there is a long thread a while back about safety in glasgow) but do take a few precautions.
In saying that I know someone who doesn't lock their car, so it must just be luck.

If you lock your bike up in a safer place then you'll be fine. Bring it in at night though. I leave my bike locked up in town for 8 hours each day and it's still with me.
