Medicine at 17?

Can I just check, does Glasgow let 17 year olds start after 6th year? (Not me, im 30!!) I'm just curious because I met a mother who said her daughter had an unconditional from Glasgow but there had been a mistake, they misread her age, and now she cant start?? Im sure she is making the whole thing up, but she insisted that she knew better than me, and that Glasgow wont let you start until you are 18!

Please, put my mind at rest!!

The rule the Scottish medical schools seem to have is to not allow entry until they are at least 18 (maybe there is some wiggle room), I think it is simply to allow them to further their study and gain more experience. Also, it means there is no advantage over our UK counterparts.

Yes.

I've just gone through the admissions policy and the prospectus, and it doesn't actually *say* it anywhere, but there are plenty of people in my year who were already medical students when they were celebrating their eighteenth birthdays.

Thanks guys.. I thought I was right!! This woman was suggesting to me that her daughter had held an unconditional since 4th year or something, and no matter how I told her that wasnt possible, she maintained that she was correct!
Hope all is well at Glasgow, I am regretting not applying for 2009 entry, but looking forward to 2010!!

in that regard, i think we can safely assume she is talking from an orifice other than her mouth starting at 17, well yes. being offered a place on the back of standard grade results? Well, thats just wishful thinking.

All Scottish universities will accept at 17 and a half for medicine; for other degrees, it is younger. They will sometimes waive even this for people who are at the right stage (ie skipped a year when young) following interview - I had a friend in this situation. English universities do not generally offer so much leeway - when I got my offers for my first, non-medical degree a couple of them came with disclaimers to say I could not take up university accomodation until the age of eighteen.
