Hey i am coming along to the Applicants Visit Day on March 20th.
I was wondering if anyone can give me advice on which hall to stay overnight the day before? Wolfson Hall, Queen Margaret Residence, Cairncross House, Murano Street..
cost is not an issue, i prefer ensuite, but most importantly one that is close to the university and convenient (ie direct bus services) so i can find it on the night i come. P.S. i will coming coming by train. thanx

    Hello TSE,

You may find it difficult to find a room in halls on march the 20th as the rooms are still occupied over the easter break.

The best thing to do is phone accomodation services and say what is available. All the halls are actually OK and in the morning you just follow the flow of students towards the university. (There will be Loads of student looking people and school students floating about the west end that day)

It may be easier to find a hotel in the area. Great western road has a few, including the hilton, and is only a 10 minute walk from the university

I personally dont use the bus services (ITs really only 20 mins walk from most of the halls) so cant advise where is easier to get buses from!

if you're coming to the west end from central it's probably easiest just to get a taxi - about £6.00 or so - to the hilton.
Alternatively, you want a number 20 or 66 (or 40-something, can't remember which the second number is tho) bus; you get them by going out the main entrance of central, turning right, walking until you get to a huggge shopping street (it's the big st in glasgow), turning left, walk (a minute or so) and you'll see an orange shop on the right and if you turn right there there's a bus stop, that will take you. Ask to get off at Byres Road; if you get off at that bus stop and keep on walking in the direction the bus was going it's about a ten second walk to the hilton.
Another alternative is to ask directions to the underground (two stations very close to Central), get off at hillhead and when you come out of hillhead turn right and walk - about five minutes.
Good luck, Glasgow really isn't that big or scary a place, honest

You could stay in the city centre. The Carlton George and Millenium hotel are both bang in the centre and about 10seconds walk to the subway station, then a 7 minute train ride and another minute walk to the university. May be slightly easier than getting a taxi and all!

Carlton George is about 4 mins walk from central station (Come out of the station main entrance, turn left and walk to buchanan street, turn left again, walk forard till you come to the sencond road, turn right (towards George Square) and the hotel has flaming torches at the door. Millenium is about another 10 seconds walk along the road)

Then in the morning, turn right out of your hotel, get on the subway, get of at hillhead station and follow the crowds!

(might not suit you, but its just another option)

Good choice!! That's exactly what I did for my interview, best choice I made in a long, long time. Stay at Murano Street, I've never met more friendly people in my life, so welcoming. Everyone thinks your part of the uni, they have an awesome common room with TVs where u can go chill and watch late night TV, bus service to the union.

And u get an apartment, with kitchenette, bathroom, bedroom for half the price of a hotel room! Makes sense! Experience the whole uni thing!

It really depends on how far you want to walk in the morning, and how much you want to spend. Hilton Grosvenor is probably the closest one that I can think of on that list. Crowne Plaza and City Inn are right on the Clyde but will be about 20-30 minutes to walk in the morning. A lot of them I've never heard of.

Um, the Belhaven is also extremely close (on one of the GW Rd terraces, first one going into town after the Botanics) - same directions as the Hilton basically except you cross the big road at the bus stop, and same distance from the uni and MUCH cheaper. Had been trying to remember what it was called. It's nice inside too.

    Hi all,
I'm reposting these b/c I'm in the process of choosing accomodations for this upcoming year. Any thoughts would be helpful (for those of you who have replied already, MANY THANKS!)

    - what halls allow greater interaction between its residents?
    - what halls are closer to social scenes such as cofe shops, live music, art expositions, theather, clubs/bars?
    - in what hall am I more likely to get a single room? Does that mean I don't get to share a living room/kitchen/bathroom with anyone or does that just mean I get to sleep in alone in a room?
    - are the Student Apartments the closest ones to the med school? Are they nice?
    - is it safe to keep a scooter around in the dorms or on campus while u go to classes or sleep?
    - is it common for people to look for their own house as soon as 1st year is over? in general, how does people rate hall life with private housing or living downtown?

    peace
