Difference between working in a hospital and working in a GP?
Hi everyone,
I'm just wondering what differences there are between working in a General Practise and working in a hospital, as I imagine there are many.
Thanks!

yes, there are lots!!
If you're still at the application stage, which I guess you are, your best bet is to set up some work experience for yourself so you can start compliling your own list. 1st hand experience would really point out differences and similarities.Oxford GEP fresher Medic 2009

I've done a work experience at a hospital before and a few weeks ago I did a work experience at a GP.. and well the differences I noticed were that the GPs seemed to have a closer relationship with their patients.
I just needed to confirm this! Because i don't believe one work experience will give you all the answers as accurately as you want!
Yes, I am applying for 2010 entry.

Also, the fact that GPs always get to follow their patients progress, and this is possibly not the case for some hospitalised patients?

ahh, see macca, you are making a start already.
ere are some of my differences, macca
- you tend to cover more mileage in wards, and therefore need to spend mush more on shoes (which Lizze and Clemette do anyway, mind)
- gp practices are usually colder than wards, but ave better lighting and nifter decor to thoughtfully stare at when you want to ignore patients and relatives
-
- you get 'otter chicks in wards (= student nusses)
- coffee mugs are invariably better in GP practices.
- i get less lost in gp practices"...reminds me of childhood memories,

:P wistfully thinks of the days when I could spend money on shoes for me ... £40 a pair for children's shoes that need replacing every two months x2 = one pair of DMs to last mum the year.
Seriously, I always thought that it must be a bit frustrating (and a tiny bit tedious) being a GP.Sam

I always wanted to work in a hospital where there's a bit more scenery to change, but then my friend's sister is a gp and works 3 days a week but still earns good money which I'd like because I don't want my children to just go to nursery all the time. I ain't pushing em out to hand to someone else so yeah... I'm a bit torn atm. I'm not having any any time soon but I like to plan for the future.
Can GPs swap to hospitals later?
