GPs- specialising/ research opportunities
Hey guys
Ok, so this is really very premature before I even start my course but I guess everyone thinks forwards to their career right??? Looking to see if anyone can share any info/ insights.
I've been thinking up until now that I will probably end up in a medical speciality (keeping a v open mind as to what), partly because I think I want to be involved in research and partly as I think I would enjoy being a 'specialist' in my field rather than a 'jack-of-all-trades'. However the more I think about my life outside my career, the more general practice is appealing. I will be 30 when I graduate so 32 at the end of foundation years and looking to have kids at some point and GP would be more compatable with family life (thats an accepted fact isn't it??)
I'm thinking that if I did that I could have a nice career with young kids (more opportunity for part-time, social hours etc) and then explore opportunities such as becoming a GPSI later. Just wondering if anyone knew how 'easy' or available specialising as a GP is and/ or being involved in research. Is it hard to come by or if a GP want to do such things and puts the work in, the opportunities are there??
I am VERY aware that this is MILEs away and may change massively in the interim, just curious!!Oxford GEP fresher Medic 2009
