Question What should I do? Is there any hope for me?

    Hi,

Let me introduce myself and explain my situation. My name is WeeDoctor and I ultimately want to become a Histopathologist.

To get into medical school I know you need top GCSE and A level grades. Currently I have 6 GCSE's at grade C (I have retaken them twice) and no A levels (I am 19 years of age by the way and the reason why I didn't start my A levels last year is because I couldn't get a place at any college in my area as they were all full)

So what should I do? In my mind I have two options:

1.) Re-take my GCSE's once again and achieve the top grades. The reason why I failed to achieve the top grades before is because a lack of self belief which meant that I didn't apply myself very much. I am considered by my peers and teachers to be quite intelligent. I just didn't apply myself because I've always had a inferiority complex according to my therapist.

    &

Start my A levels in Chemistry, Physics and Biology

2.) Try to enrol on a Access course at a place like College of West Anglia.

What do you think I should do. I really at am a loss. I would be grateful if you could offer me some advice.

    Thanks for all your help.

    Best Regards,
    WeeDoctor

I think you should start by contacting some medical schools for advice on the best step forward, check out medschoolsonline, for a full list of courses and contact info.
Seems as though you need to work on your confidence issues, do you do any extra curricular activities, these may help build your confidence and be very good to add to your personal statement if and when you apply.

Thanks fortune for your advice! It is much appreciated! You can be rest assured I will take it on board.

However, do you honestly think I have a chance of realising my ambition? To be honest I think there is no hope for me

    Thanks once again!

    Best Regards,
    WeeDoctor

I would agree with contacting medical schools before you do anything else. As after resitting your GCSE grades are still below the entry requirements for most medical schools you will need to show some evidence of extenuating circumstances if you were to be considered.
ANYTHING WRITTEN BY ME ON THIS SITE DOES NOT REPRESENT THE VIEWS OF SOUTHAMPTON UNIVERSITY!

Finally a final year medical student!

There is always hope, if not now maybe later, gosh you are still very young, people apply to study medicine into their 30's 40's and even 50's so don't give up hope, not passing all your exams now is not the end of the world.
