Unhappy Written Communication Section

Hi, Newbie here.
I am an American who is planning to sit the GAMSAT for the first time on the 21st. For those of you who have taken the test before or taken a prep course for it, can you offer any insight as to what the graders are looking for in a written response? I know for tests such as the MCAT or GRE, graders look for a specific formula within your writing; such as Thesis, followed by antithesis and then synthesis. I realize that taking a prep course for this exam would probably help me here, but they do not offer gamsat prep in the states as far as I know. I am absolutely terrified of the written portion, considering that I was educated in America and the writing style and spelling is different here (ie program vs programme, organize vs. organise). I'm freaking out. Please help!!!?!?!

Mr Biggs,

I wouldn't worry too much about your spelling. Two exams will be pretty tough in just one hour so the examiners shouldn't care about anglo american spelling and grammar. You should however correct any glaring mistakes.

The main thrust of the marks are for:
1.Thought and content - quality of what's said.
2.Organisation and expression - quality of the structure and the language used.

There is a slight emphasis on thought and content.
Your first task will suit an argumentative response. Intro, one side, other side and conclusion. Whenever you make a point you need to back it up with a logical arguement or an example. Keep reading the papers for topical examples that you can throw in.
The second will need a more emotional response. You could be discussing ethics, equality, the family, morals, fear or abortion etc. The list is endless. You might start with intro, argument (or point) then build on that over the next couple of paragraphs then sum up in the last.
Make sure you plan the essay before you start writing. You get 5 minutes perusal time (nothing can be written during this time) then 60 thumb numbing minutes for both essays.

Hope this helps
