I bought Both of them in 2005 but I dont think that makes any difference. The contents of Guru is hardly going to change in one year. Its like comparing 1st and 2nd edition texts of a particular. Its only when you compare 4th or 5th edition that you see a real difference. As for the UCAS handbooks, There are plenty of questions for you practice and I would imagine this years is very similar.
I think the guru was a great help for the first section on humanities. It tells you how to find the answer to the questions in the text quickly without having to read every single word. You simply have no time. In the humanities section, there are sections which have their own questions. The patterns of the questions are very similar in each question and the guru helped me how to understand the differences. The guru also explains the answers to its practice questions which i found a great help because you could use the information to answer the UCAS practice questions. Ucas dont give you explanations, just answers.
The section on essay writing was also great. Again they give you plenty (50+) of examples of proverbs. And there are examples of essays in different styles (Argumentative versus reflective) and it gives you an example of an esay that would get say 5/10, 7/10, 9/10 and 10/10 so you can compare them. My essay writing definitely improved and it got quicker.
As with anything it takes dedication and plenty of practice. I was 4% off the pass mark but that doesent mean anything. I just obviously was not quite good enough to pass. The guru gives you the tools to pass the exam. Its how you use them according to your intellingence which determines whether youll pass or not.
Hope that helps.
