I will be sitting the UCKAT for the first time this year. I've started revision already, but am experiencing significant trauma with QR.

A bit of a biography:

I was diagnosed with dyslexia (and dyscalculia, which was not a separate diagnosis at the time) at the age of 21. By this time I had already been through my mathematics education at a very elitist state grammar school that really didn't have time for girls who struggled with anything (i.e. the kind of school that only ever rewarded high achievement and never effort or improvement). So I was left to assume I was thick, and to develop a rather potent hatred and fear of mathematics. To the school's immense surprise I won a place Cambridge to read Natural Sciences and chose to study mainly cell and molecular biology courses. I'm not including this to brag, just to reassure anyone who feels the urge to leap into a well-meaning 'Are you sure this the right career for you?' lecture that I am more than capable of handling medical science. Many of the courses I took were similar or identical to the medics' courses, and my maths course was more complex than theirs (they made me do calculus...eek).

The point:

At the moment I cannot seem to handle the maths in the UKCAT (I'm using mainly the 600 and Kaplan books). I think mainly because I am terrified of it and because I know my lifelong dream of becoming a doctor rests on my doing well (there is a good reason I didn't do medicine as an undergrad, but we won't go there for now ;)). Every time I sit down to revise QR I just panic instantly, even over questions I should be able to answer. There's also the time limit, which I'm ignoring for now, since generally speaking maths+time pressure=tears.

I'm not looking for any specific help or tips, as all I can really do is practise and try to ameliorate the extreme emotional reaction I have as much as I can. I would like to know if there are any others who feel or have felt the same way about QR, with or without a dyslexia/dyscalculia diagnosis? Any successful applicants? Also, any general reassurance from anyone would be welcome :).

Thanks

EDIT: That should be *dyscalculia* in the title

Hi all,

I'm working through the QR section of the 600Q book, and from what I understand, the questions in this book are significantly harder than those presented on the test. It's almost impossible for me to work through them with a time restriction. I'm wondering why this book is reviewed so highly when this section (which is formidable to most) is completely non-reflective of the actual test.

Currently, I'm trying to just answer the questions in my own time, and trying to learn from the mistakes. But I'm wondering whether it's a waste of time completely by using this book for this section.

Is everyone else finding the same thing? I've even been consulting my friend who is better than maths than I am, and says that these questions are a real challenge.

Practise & Pass Professional Verbal Reasoning Tests
£5 (RRP £8.99)

Brilliant Verbal Reasoning Tests - Pearson
General Prep:

iSC Medical Interview Skills Consulting – Medical School Interview Course Book 2013-
£40 (RRP £169 for course and book)
The interview course cost £169 and provided you with all the help, hints and tips you need for your Medical School interview (please note, it does have a couple of handwritten notes in it as I wanted to add some points which were raised). I found it incredibly helpful to prepare for the various stations you get at a Medical School interview and also for the Group exercises you get at some Medical Schools. Well worth the £169 I paid.

Contents: Ethical Scenarios, Newspapers articles, Interview Qs, Selection criteria, Question formats, Structuring answers, Why Medicine, Why this Medical School, Doctors' non-clinical activities, Medical ethics - Consent, Children & Consent, Ethical Principles, Role Play Stations, Teaching Stations, Group discussions, the NHS, Medical Training, Medical Training, The Multidisciplinary team, Body Language

Medical School Interviews – iSC Medical
£10 (RRP £25)

The perfect companion to the interview course book, I actually answered all 151 questions in preparation for my interview, perhaps OTT but a lot came up!

Succeed in Your Medical School Interview – Dr. Christopher See
£5 (RRP £14.99)

How to Get Into Medical School – Dr. Christopher See
£5 (RRP £14.99)

Getting into Medical School 2012 entry – Horner & Piumatti
£5 (RRP £12.99)

Write the Perfect Personal Statement – iSC Medical
£10 (RRP £15)

You’re Hired! How to Write a Brilliant CV
£5 (RRP £9.99)

All Books I can sell for: £272 (RRP: £600+)

They all helped me to achieve both a high UKCAT and GAMSAT school and also of course 2 offers for graduate entry Medicine!

I would prefer to sell all together but if someone wants to pick and mix lemme know and I can offer a discount. I would prefer pick up (from Oxford) or may be able to get them to London, as P&P could cost quite a bit as they are quite heavy.
