SSC's at Edinburgh

Hey

I was wondering if a current medical student at Edinburgh would be able to provide me with some information about the SSC's of the Medical Course. Basically what the topics are like, how they examined and how much choice do students actually have?

2 SSCs in year 1. You have a choice of about 20-30 topics for both, in groups of 6-8. For the first one you do a wiki and a flipping ridiculous Blue Peter style poster. For the second one, you do a wiki.

1 SSC in year 2. You decide the topic with who you want. You do a wiki.

There is a theme here isn't there....

1 SSC in year 3. Health related to do with teamwork, you can choose from a list or arrange yourself. You do about 4-5 afternoons, then write a 2 side thing about teamwork in healthhcare setting. Rather Mickey Mouse IMHO...

1 big SSC in year 4. You choose topic, you arrange it, you do it for 12 weeks along side a bit of clinical teaching in dermatology, ENT etc. A big report to write - some people try to get it published. A major piece of work.

Well, the first one I did was about handwashing and MRSA, the second was about smallpox, the third about how safe mountaineering and climbing is. Basically the first two have projects on everything from ethics to microbiology to surgery to childbirth to anything under the sun!
