Problem Based Learning
What is the format of the problem based learning provided at Edinburgh? Is it the type where you split work up in a group and then report back to each other, or is it more another way of saying independent reading and work? If anybody could shed some light onto what it actually consists of I would be v v grateful, thanks.

hi i just joined the forum today and thot id shed sum light on pbl for you since uv had no replies! im in first year at edinburgh med school and the pbl is really quite good. wot happens is u r split into groups, mines has 11 people, and each week you are given a case. in the group you a chair and a scribe for each meeting so that they are controlled and an account of wot you are doing and your direction is taken. in the group u brainstorm the case and come up with around 5 questions to research in order to further your understanding of the issues brought up. each member has to research all the questions, it is not divided into members like take a question each which is better since despite the bigger workload you will each have a good understanding of all aspects. you are given 3 days to do your research before the second meeting where you present your findings. there is a facilitator present but they arent involved much they just keep you on track. hope that helps , k xx

hey, there are lectures with some stuff that will back up your pbl but they are not necessarily at the same time eg. we had a case last semester that seemed totally disconnected to wot we were doing in lectures but then it came up in lectures about a month later . pbl is used to further ur knowledge so iv found that i dont really use my lecture notes wen im doin my research because u r expected to go further.

Could someone clear something up for me please?
If the Edinburgh course had to be classified as either Traditional(lecture based mainly) or PBL(like Manchester, Liverpool, etc) where would it be??? I know this is probably a stupid question but can't seem to get any clear answer from the prospectus.
Thanks for the helpMedicine 06...

For pbl you're meant to get your information mainly from textbooks and write down where you found it so other people can go look it up if they want. For some cases you find that a lot of the group have used the same textbook so it's not great when everyone has the exact same information. Sometimes it's good to use a book that's not the core textbook as it gives the group more to discuss. You can use websites as well depending on what the topic is and how reliable the information is. But wikipedia isn't looked on as a good source!
