    Durham Interviews 2012

Hi guys, I have been given an interview notice from Durham... My interview is on the 25th of January in Newcastle!

This thread is for anyone preparing for interviews or who has already done their interviews. You may give tips and advices, but you may NOT post interview questions, as it is against the forum rules.

Thank you and good luck to everyone!

    Hi there

I had an interview for Durham last week and I just noticed you had no replies so I thought I'd send you a message! I don't suppose you've heard anything back yet?

    Hey

I got my offer from Durham two weeks ago. However I could not be sure if I should go there or not because its such a small city and stuff. opinions?

    Hi

Well I've already firmed my offer and I live in the local area so I know what its like around the uni. It depends what you want out of uni life. Where else have you received offers from?

Well I've firmed my offer too but I am also considering about going to Canada (Mcgill) and following the premed track. However, I'll probably choose Durham over McGill because, you know, its Medicine after all!

What I was thinking about the city is that because its such a small city students generally may not find anything to do in their leisure times. Can you tell me a bit about the area around the uni?

Okay well across the road (a dual carriage-way) from the uni there's a leisure park (Teesside Park) with various restaurants in e.g. Frankie and Bennys, Pizza Express, Chiquitos and there's also a cinema and bowling and a casino too. There's also a range of shops in the same leisure park such as M&S, Outfit, JJB Sports etc. The uni is right on the Tees barrage and I know that they do white water rafting on there. The nearest town is probably Stockton which I don't know much about because I never go there, there's a few bars and stuff but that's about it.

Then there's Middlesbrough which is about a 10 minute drive down the road which has lots of shops, a cinema too, gyms, restaurants, bars and clubs. It's fairly cheap for a night out there.

There's also Yarm which is a bit nicer/up-market but also more expensive. It's basically just a high street with shops and bars there but its quite good for a night out.

The general area is quite good to live in because you're not far from the coast so there's a few beaches you can visit and I know that in Saltburn they have surfing lessons there so that's probably quite fun. Also you'll be right near the North Yorkshire Moors so if you're an outdoors type I'm sure there's plenty to do there.

It'll be really easy to get to all these places too because there's a train station about 5 minutes walk from the campus and these towns that I've told you about are not very far at all so it would be a cheap train ticket.

Overall it's a nice place to live, Middlesbrough's a little scruffy but as long as you don't LIVE in Middlesbrough which you wouldn't be, you'd be in Thornaby, it's fine. Middlesbrough tends to get a bad reputation because of high crime rates etc, but I've lived in the area for 22 years and I've never had a problem. Obviously if you're wanting massive nights out every night then somewhere like Leeds or Manchester would have been better for you but you can still have a great time here, and it sounds like people on the course get to know each other very well because the class is quite small which I think is good.
