Second Year Booklist

I thought an additional list was in order, now that I know what to add to it .

The Following texts are very useful additional purchases for second year strands. They will be used along side the first year texts, particularly Clinically Oriented Anatomy and Berne & Levy.

Clinical Sciences and Investigative Medicine (CSIM)

- Microbiology

Notes on Medical Microbiology by Timbury et al ISBN 0443071640. No great detail, but very good on the basics of bacterial/ viral/ fungal classification, structure etc. Good all-round text.

- Immunology & Haematology

Immunology for Medical Students by Nairn and Helbert ISBN 0723431906

Essential Haematology by Hoffbrand et al ISBN 0632051531. As the name suggests, this really is essential for Haematology. Covers everything necessary.

Haematology: An Illustrated Colour Text by Howard and Hamilton ISBN 0443070857. This has less detail than Essential Haematology, but has two pages devoted to each area so is pretty good for revision. Not really appropriate as a first reference though, Essential Haematology is the better of the two.

Thought, Sense and Movement (TSM) aka Neurological and Skeletomotor Systems (NSS)

[Recommendations in post below]

Life Cycle

May want to consider the ABC of Breast Diseases BMJ Press, ISBN 0727914618. Useful sections on breast cancer. Not essential as several copies in Library.

Optional Extras

MacLeod's Clinical Examination by Munro and Campbell is worth considering, it is the complete version of the smaller Introduction to Clinical Examination that you have probably already encountered. Useful for Clinical years as well as living anatomy.

Right, final update to the book lists methinks...

I will start by congratulating anyone who has managed to get this far into the course, on the down side you have the hardest two terms of your time here coming up! (You thought branches of the IMA were difficult? Think again.)

Thought, Sense and Movement (TSM) aka Neurological and Skeletomotor Systems (NSS)

Choice of one (or both) of:

- Concise Text of Neuroscience by Kingsley

- Neuroscience: Exploring the Brain by Bear, Connors and Paradiso

Not entirely sure which one to recommend, though Dr Banks prefers Kingsley, and since he is the strand leader it might be an idea to get hold of a copy.

Will also need the standard Moore's Clinically Oriented Anatomy, perhaps refer to a copy of Essential Clinical Anatomy (less detail so easier read) as well as a Physiology and Embryology text.

Anatomy

- An Atlas of Neuroanatomy would be pretty handy, though I suggest checking the copies in anatomy to see which ones you like.

My atlas of choice is: Neuronatomy; An illustrated Colour Text by Crossman and Neary. The atlas seems to be the best way of learning the structures of the brain, and ironically is better than the more detailed texts for explaining the tracts and functional details of the brain.

A General Anatomy Atlas is also useful when attempting to memorise the anatomy of Upper & lower limb, and head & neck. While not essential I can recommend one of the following:

- Color Atlas of Anatomy by Rohen, Yokochi, and Lütjen-Drecoll (a personal favourite).

- McMinn's Colour Atlas of Human Anatomy by McMinn et al is a popular choice.

Good luck, you will need it!

After tidying my bookcases I thought another addition to the booklists was in order, but with a slight twist:

Books to avoid:

Wheater's Basic Histopathology by Stevens, Lowe and Young. I had forgotten that I actually own this text... Having bought it thinking it would probably be useful I have since referred to it only once. Leave it and just use the library copies if you really want to know what the different patterns of necrosis look like histologically.

Basic and Clinical Endocrinology by Greenspan et al. I'm still trying to think why I even own this book... Think it was a suggested purchase for first year. Will report back if I find it has a use in clinical school.

More may follow...
