Do you need the books after first year year? Just that I know a couple of doctors and 1 2nd year Durham student?
Also do students sell the books after 1st year? I mean its pointless every generation of students buying new books if the old ones dont need them?
Are they available from a library?

The library does stock all of the recommended texts but the numbers available aren't huge.
I've got all the books I bought as a first year and beyond and I'm now qualified. In fact, if I'm honest, I've used one or two of them far more now than I ever did as a student!

if you buy online you can use a service like quidco (do a google search) which gives you cashback on every penny spent.
so if you buy thru them via amazon you will get cashback. its a bit like a discount.

Hi,
I've just finished my interview for Durham, and I'm still waiting to hear my reply on whether I was successful or not, but in the mean time I was wondering if perhaps things might have changed over this last year.
If not, should I look at some of these texts in advance, and if which would you recommend? It seems to be that I was thinking of looking into some basic Anatomy, Histology and Physiology but would anyone else have any suggestions?
So that seems to be the end of my queries, I would love to read your advice.

Human Physiology: The basis of medicine (Oxford Core Texts): Gillian Pocock, Christopher D Richards: Amazon.co.uk: Books
That is by far the best book to have a look at before you start the course in my opinion. You get countless references from it in the first proper strand. It's really easy to read and goes through the basics really well. You do have to use it in conjunction with a more in depth book, but is probably perfect for what your looking for.

I guess this will replace the old edition on the reading list?

With regards to useful 1st year textbooks I have found these the best by far:
The basis of Human Physiology (Oxford)
Gray's Anatomy for Students (Elsevier)
Macleods Clinical Examination (")
Wheater's Functional Histology (")
McMinn's Clinical Atlas of Anatomy - actual dissection photos v.useful
They advise Rang and Dale's Pharmacology book but i find it too in-depth, and would adivce Rapid Revision Pharmacology instead - the level is more appropriate for medicine.
In terms of revision guides, Medicine at a Glance is brill, and they do a whole series on biochem and endocrinlogy which is useful for the NME module in the latter part of 1st year.
The Oxford Hanbook of Clinical Medicine is an absolute god-send and recommend it thoroughly.
Don't tell anyone I said this, but Wikipedia is a brilliant resource too and most of my year group use it before referring to textbooks... :P
Hope this helpsDurham Medical Student 2008 - Stephenson College

Hey, I was just wondering; I already have clinically oriented anatomy by moore; is it worth buying gray's as well?
and I also have a histology book by stevens and lowe - anyone know whether that's good enough?
and for physiology I already have 2 books; Silverthorn and Guyton, so buying yet another book seems overkill - so yet again - to buy or not to buy?
what's your opinion???
And it might be nice if the links in the first post were updated; all the books I checked already have newer editions.
Thanks!
