Financing dentistry
I have a question...
I know it's a bit early, but I've started worrying about finance. I'm going to be starting a 4-year dentistry course this September.
I just spoke to a few people at Student Finance England about loans. I've been told that because I already received a student loan for my first degree, for the first year I'm not entitled to any help. nada. not even a maintenance loan! i was under the impression that we had to pay our own tuition fees, but we could at least get a maintenance loan!!
Is this true?! Maybe this is a new thing they've brought in....Last edited by e11even; 11-02-2009 at 07:48 PM.

Hi
No you can get the maintence loan but not the loan for your fees(although a few in my year even got that) Make sure they know it is a undergraduate degree you are studying which the BDS is because some had a problem last year as the LEA in their area thought that because they had a Degree already they were doing a postgrad course that you cant get loans for dont think they get it that its just an accelerated undergrad course. In year 2-4 you get your fees paid by the NHS and sometimes a bursary that you dont have to pay back but that depends on household income you can also get some of the student loan about half I think if you get a full NHS bursary which is about 3000 pounds .At Peninsula there is also a bursary that most people seemed to get in the 1st year which ranged from 500-1500 pounds that also depends on household income and you dont have to pay it back.A lot of students in my year have got a professional training loan from the NatWest bank you can borrow upto 20000 pounds over the 4 years and start paying back once qualified the branch in Plymouth are very helpful so assume its the same in other branches.Hope that helps
