As a first year med student, are you expected to do a night shift once in a while? If not, could you offer to volunteer during a night shift?

I not too keen on them myself. But I do think that some out of hours experience is great for med students, and I encourage them to do it. Not nights, however. Or not all night, anyway.
cj09, nights are pretty much out as a 1st year, IMO. You need to have some proper ward & patient experience before you do out of hours work."The greater the ignorance the greater the dogmatism" (Sir William Osler)

I'm more curious than "desperate" actually. I'd like to know what is expected of med students concerning night shifts, on-call etc. Yeah I'd like to experience doing night shifts when i'm in med school; but telling me otherwise is not really in your, or anyone else's, place to tell me differently. Everyone is different. Why are you so desperate to do night shifts? I dont get it. If I could never do nights again I wouldnt complain!!
You don't have to "get it", you should just answer someone's question without making it about you and what you don't get.Last edited by cj09; 22-11-2009 at 11:41 PM.

Thanks for letting me know.cj09, nights are pretty much out as a 1st year, IMO. You need to have some proper ward & patient experience before you do out of hours work.
Is it during your third year when night shifts are introduced to your schedule/timetable?

Get a job as an HCA then and then you can experience nights and get paid at the same time.
Clearly what is expected at medical school is very different depending on your medical school.
If you're going to be rude though, I hope you dont get a place at med school though, then you can just continue to dream forever.Last edited by rjm; 23-11-2009 at 01:06 AM.
