Yes but how many people actually do them? I did as a student but was generally the exception rather than the norm. Plus I did them in the day (got that makes me sound old, it was only 4-6years ago) when the team was on take, so if the consultant was on pick up it tended to be their SHO/SpR that was on take and I'd do the take with them. Doesnt work like that any more.

At Manchester loads of us have, you just have to ask and they let you, it's not a big deal. When we do O+G I'm pretty sure most of our hospitals make you do night shifts.

Not uncommon in my experience. Both in terms of what I did and what I have seen happen in 2 different med schools from a working perspective.

There was a waiting list for A&E Fri/Sat night at some of the bigger hospitals at my med school. It was where you did your first sutures, clerked acutely unwell people for the first time (ok they weren't that sick if you got to see them, but a little sick is just fine to start with!)...

Clearly the medical students attached to the large teaching hospital that I work in are lazier than the average medical school then. Never seen a medical student do a night shift in 3 1/2 years as a doctor.

I did a night shift last weekend in O&G and a Sunday early a couple of weeks before that. We have to do 2 shifts on the delivery suite, one of which has to be a night shift so we all get some experience. We have the opportunity to sign up for more if we want to, but not many people do more than is compulsory.

Never seen a 3rd year stay late in paeds, they usually leave at the end of 4pm handover. Never had one on any of my night shifts/weekends.

Well in 2007/08 when I was in third year we had to do oncalls and get signed off. And some people's were on the weekends. I used to go in saturday mornings to AMU and clerk patients.

I also know that me and others in my year stayed late in obs and gynae, but that was in pompey.
