Worried that I am a Hep carrier!

Help!During work experience earlier this year I had the necessary immunisations (over the course of a few months) and then had the blood test to see if I now had the antibodies, unfortunately I didn't (my GP said that it may be due to my size - 6'4" 15 stone, and it's not uncommon to need an extra injection) so I had another immunisation.Today I have been for another blood test to check for the antibodies and been told that if this comes back negative they will test to see if I am a carrier!I was too shocked at the time to ask what that will mean in terms of my health and going to medical school,if I am.
Anyone know anything/been in a similar situation?I am now worried sick and I have my UKCAT this afternoon!

Im going through a similar situation i didnt respond to the vaccine and wasnt producing the threshold amount of antigen so therefore had to have a booster. Im just waiting on the test results.

Its very unlikely you will have hep b, you would have probably been diagnosed by now or would have been suffering from some of the associated symptomns.

All this means is that you are possibly a non responder. Something like 15% of all people dont respond to the vaccine.

In my case, if the results come back negatvie im going to get tested to see if I am a carrier of hep (which is unlikely) If not they redo the immunisation process using an alternative form of the hep b vaccine. To see if I respond to that.

In regards to med school from what Ive read, if you are a carrier of hep B the outlook is not that great. If you don't respond to any of the vaccines, occupational health will give you a talk about safety and extra precautions you need to take and then will let you carry on as normal

I would wait to see of your blood test and then ring the med schools you are applying to, so you can let them know your situation.

my sister had to have extra jabs (she's a dental nurse) as her levels were too low and i think she has to have a booster more often than the usual 5 years.

don't worry too much. if you are a carrier you probably wont be allowed to to EPP (exposure prone procedures) such as venepuncture and operations.

it doesn't mean you can't be a doctor though, it just means the procedures you can do will be limited to stop you passing anything on to your patients.

Minor point - venepuncture/cannulation/abgs etc are not exposure prone procedures (EPP).

The official definition of an EPP is as follows:

Quote:
Exposure prone procedures (EPPs) are those where there is a risk that injury to the worker may result in exposure of the patient's open tissues to the blood of the worker. These procedures include those where the worker's gloved hands may be in contact with sharp instruments, needle tips or sharp tissues (spicules of bone or teeth) inside a patient's open body cavity, wound or confined anatomical space where the hands or fingertips may not be completely visible at all times.

No one ever suggested testing me for being a carrier of Hep B, and I had 6 jabs and didn't respond. Am now a touch more concerned about those abnormal LFT results...

From speaking to my doc I dont think there is a consistent way in which the immunisation process is undertaken, if you are a non responder.

So some places may check the patient for being a Hep B carrier others may not.

But to be honest my doctor had no idea how to undertake hep B immunisations so was constantly referring to the BNF. I usually see the nurse as she deals with immunisations but shes been away over summer.
