To be honest, I agree with a fair few comments on the group, especially the egotistical side of things. I knew medics were going to be arrogant when I came to Manchester, but I never thought it would be on this scale..

My views do not represent UCLMS or the University of Manchester.

i think that goes for a lot of students in general though. whether its someone thats at uni feeling all superior over someone that works full time at tesco, or someone thats at the 'real' uni and someone whos at the cities metropolitan. just not sure why medics have the worst reputation.

and in reply to Singh.Simran, i know i wont be a total outcast, the medics do tend to stick together so hopefully will make loads of friends on the course; but i wud like to add a lil variety to my friendship circle and make friends wiv non medics. i didnt make any medic friends as an undergrad (for no particular reason) so was just curious to ask and find out whether this is all chatter that goes on behind medics backs, or if medics are actually faced with this kind of hostility frequently

The only reason I want a medical degree is so that I get to wear a Medsoc hoodie - and I *hate* hoodies.

Oh dear. With the hope of redeeming my fellow psych grads, I feel the need to point out that back in my day, those of us who got to take first bio as an option usually trounced the 'proper' bio students. I still remember that cold December morning when we score major brownie points from the staff and death threats from the students for knowing what gated channels were. Ah, nostalgia.

But yes, that FB group is full of people with unresolved issues surrounding their own insecurities. What they proclaim to be arrogance or egotism is in fact just healthy ownership of achievement - they would not, for example, similarly complain about people being comfortable with their success on the soccer pitch or golf course.

:-p

Agreed, many students are up their own a*ses. In all fairness though, you only have to look as far as this forum to see why medics are not liked in general. The cliquéy culture of medics is moderately exclusive, but usually within the medics community, an even cliquier community exists who really give us a bad name. I don't think medics hoodies are a bad thing, there should be pride with whatever you're studying and advertising I think is perfectly acceptable.

I also think that there is jealousy with many life scientists (more than half of the life scientists in my hall failed to get into medschool/vetschool). Hell, I'd probably be like them if I wasn't at medical school.

As for making friends who are not medics, most of my core social group are economists. It's easy to make non-medic friends.
