PhD

Hi, i was wondering whether anybody has any views (ie has done or are in process of doing) on doing a PhD. I have just finished my intercalated year and i have been offered the opportunity to do a PhD. I enjoy doing research but my primarily still want to be a medical doctor. Does anybody know how much benefit this would have in my future career etc. thanks for any information.

im not the best person to advise you but since i considered a phd after my iBSc, here is my 2p worth (i.e my own reasons why i didnt do one):

-doing a iPhD means you will forget/get rusty
-also you dont get paid (unlike if you did one as a doc)
-you probably dont know what speciality you will end up in so why not do a pHd in your chosen career?

i cant really think of reasons for doing one except to decide if you want to follow the academic route and do academic FY2 job. it probably wont give you much advantage since you dont score points for a phd on your FP application form (you will get points for your bsc)

Does that sentence really sum it up for you? In which case, you have a NO answer.

You need the pros and cons lists. Make them! Then you need to look at these honestly. What do you want to do? Go back to clin med? if so, do it! You can always justify the decisions you want. To yourself. You are the most important person to please (odd concept for many medics!!). Do what you want.

More objectively, a PhD will provide learning opportunities that medicine does not. Many transferable skills to talk about on those forms that relate to job applications. Also potentially papers, conference presentations, team working skills, analytical skills... But you will deskill medically at the same time. However, doing a PhD/MD later on often provides the opportunity to maintain clinical skills at the same time as being paid to do research (rather than a grant).

But life is not about a careers tick book. It's about doing things to make you the best person you can be for you. This is often the best person you can be for others too (IME)! Be true to yourself - 1st and foremost.

A bit vague, I know, but hopefully helpful...

PS: Don't let the flattering nature of being offered a PhD influence you (but enjoy it too!).
