Just out of interest how does your med school give exam results? Post on a board, email, just a list of failures (if not on it, assume you've passed), blackboard etc etc? What kind of breakdown, feedback do you get?

We get an email, followed by the same document posted to our house... We get a mark out of however many and the grade boundaries, then wether we've progressed or not!

Newcastle used to post the results on the LSE (Learning Support Environment - their in-house version of Blackboard) - anonymous exam number followed by grade (M, S, B or U) in each of the three domains examined. The same list was also posted on the main medical school noticeboard.
Finals was slightly different - the initial result was simply a list of names with a merit or distinction indicated. If you were on the list, you'd passed. A couple of weeks later, they sent us a full breakdown of how we performed in each exam.

We used to get results posted on notice board by student number with full breakdown on paper several weeks later.

Thanks so much. This seems similar to what they do at Bristol. Do you think this is a good way of doing it at your school? We've had no marks for anything the entire year (3rd) and still won't get any till mid-July. But if you're not on the fail list you just assume you passed. Just seems to irk people, that you have NO IDEA at all how you are progressing throughout the year. But it sounds like this seems to happen elsewhere.

Ours come up on one of our student intranet systems- you just log in and get your individual banded marks for each paper

We get ours on the intranet site, it gives us the mark for each paper, but you don't see where you came against the rest of the year (which we can see for the incourse assessments). We got ours a week later...

Pass/Fail/Distinction get posted by student number on the pinboard in the med school. Then later, you can go and see your personal advisor to get a bit more feedback, although I get frustrated that it's all in the form of 'Question 1, so-many-marks, Question 2 so-many-marks' etc. By the time you get the feedback, you've forgotten what the questions were! I'd prefer feedback a la 'You suck at anatomy, you're quite good at resp' etc.

We get our on the intranet with an email sent to notify you when they're posted up. We get the mark, a grade, where u rank in the whole year (a number) and quartiles now for all exams and end of yr module summaries. It can get a little confusing cos there are so many numbers. For finals it used to be pass/fail/distinction on a board but I dont know what happened last yr.
We used to get them on a noticeboard using our student IDs and no names but apparently that goes against data protection or something so they have to do it individually now.

How is the whole Merit/Distinction thing decided? Does it vary by school or is it national? And is it by grade or by ranking?
Just curious!
