If you don't know what foundation house officers have to do then how have you come to the decision that medicine is what you want to do? And if you don't know what a HO does then how the heck did you get an offer? :/ |

- What problems do you face??
towards the final years you have nowhere near as much free time as other courses. you have consultants wanting things that normally take a week to complete handed in the following day. you see things that will make your heart sink, and hold in the tears. - What do you hate about your course?? hmmm....hates a strong word. i get annoyed by the fact that you never feel like you're getting proper time off. even when not at uni you will find yourself thinking about something medical at least 10 times per day. not a bad criticism as i love medicine, but still a bit annoying. - What do you love about your course?? most things, theres rarely a dull moment. you get to meet some amazing people, and watch them journey through their illness. people provide you will knowledge that they may not have even told their own family and so there is a huge amount of trust. you get to see procedures that you've only dreamed off, do things that are amazing.. plus there is a never ending and always expanding bank of knowledge for you to learn about - cool eh? - Is there anything you would change about yout course or your work load?? hmm, perhaps some more time to get stuff done?! lol - Is there anything, that you think effects your performance- course related or just job related?? not sure what you're wanting for this question?? depends on the person i guess. as for nights, totally optional but a worthwhile experience. at glasgow, they can send you to hospitals 80 miles away in the clinical years, so unless you don't mind long drives in the morning and evenings, you will be in hospital accomodation. some are better than others, all are secure (there are guidelines from BMA on what should be provided), though not necessarily in the hospital building, so walks back and forward will be required. you will do some sort of gp placement at med school, but as for FY1 and 2, you will be in the hospital for either 5 or 6 out of 6 placements so nope, your preference to be at GP will not be taken into account immediately after you graduate.

gosh Rich' Trash you seem a bit annoyed, are you ok???
tbh i think that its rich for you to act like an arrogant twit towards someone whos obviously just trying to do some research. for goodness sake you can't tell me that you knew the ins and outs of the entire medical field before getting into med school - oh yeah thats right, you're not at med school yet - so i suggest you give the guy a break and if not at least provide some advice and info for him/her. goodness me, who'd have asking a question would require you to then dive for cover!!!!

rich and trash is unequivocally right. far too many clueless people get let into med skool. the majority of med skools are only filtering applicants primarily for suitability to the med skool, not the career, thats secondary. and some do it to a greater degree than others.
it might take a little while to realise this truth, mind.

The above decisions should all hinge on a basic understanding of what a medical student does once graduated. I mean come on, whats more basic than wether you can become a GP or a hospital doctor once graduated? I haven't applied yet, but I do know about the foundation years and I do know, to a lesser extent, about how specialist training works thereafter. Admittly, I will have to do more research on the latter before I fully commit to applying. Last edited by Rich' Trash; 11-06-2008 at 08:18 PM. |

some medics are better than others.
i fink we are talking a pretty big range of difference in deductive ability in this case.
