Exclamation For the attention of all current and to be Graduate Entry Medics

Hi everyone. Iv heard that the graduate entry medicine is much more competitive then the standard 5yr course.

Also, that quiet alot of people dont get in first time round. Additonally, some unis dont accept students straight from an undergrad course (they need post grad full time care work experience) which is not made clear on their web or is an informal criteria or somat..

So i have created this thread to clarify some of this myth and to help prospective GEP students.

Could current GEP medics please post what UNI they are at, if they or people they know got in first time 2nd time etc, and whether they know if you can apply straight from an undergrad course?

Any other myth busting info would also be appreciated.

Thank you.

Warwick University

Got in first time...and second time (sat my finals a year later than expected so had to reapply)

Entered the course straight after finishing at Birmingham

I probably had less W/E than most people as well

Birmingham GEC doesn't except people straight from their first degree (unless from oxford / cambridge apparently), and you need a first (even though it says 2.1 in their prospectus)

Hello

For 2007 entry

Nottingham GEM - Failed GAMSAT
Leicester GEM for health care professionals Rejection w/o Interview (Now you need 2 years full time POST REGISTRATION work)
Leicester 5 year Rejection after interview

For 2008 Entry

1:1 BSc(Hons) Orthoptics
Working full time as an Orthoptist
Work experience in A&E and Orthopaedics
++hobbies and student rep stuff

Birmingham GEC Unconditional
Newcastle GEM Withdrawn
Leeds 5 Year Withdrawn
Durham 5 Year Withdrawn

I applied to half 5 year and half to GEM due to the increased competition for 4 year courses.

Hope that helps

Thanks gemidge and everyone else, that was really useful, I know its exam time, but we need more responses plz!

So, so far:

Birmingham: 2 responses - don't usually accept undergrads, require 1st

Leicester: 1 response- don't accept undergrads, require 2yrs post grad
healthcare work experience

Warick: 1 response - Accept undergrads, require 2:1, good chance of
getting in first time applyng

I'm starting Bart's and the London in September on the GEP course (1st time applying) applied to
Barts: Conditional
Southampton: Reject (Immediately)
Leicester: Withdrawn
Warwick: Rejected (after offer from Barts, Warwick and Barts are linked and work together if you attend the assessment day for Barts they will send the results of the day to Warwick)

I have just graduated Surrey University with a 2:1 in Biomedical sciences. my work experience totals one years placement (as part of my degree) at Harvard medical school doing clinical trials.

Hi,

Im starting the GEP course at St George's in September 08, and got in first time.

I got rejected from the other 3 uni's I applied to - Queen Mary's, Kings, Southampton.Immediate rejection from Kings and Queen Mary's probably due to poor UKCAT scores.

Finished a BSc in Anatmoy and Physiology (2:1) 2 years ago, worked as full time care assistant at a nursing home for about 5 months, did some travelling, and did about 4 weeks of work shadowing at a hospital in Malaysia. I think most GEP courses ask for at least 3 months relevant work experience, and it was crucial as it gave me alot to talk about in the interview.

Hope that helps!

I applied during my masters, didnt take a break between masters and undergrad, it was my first time of applying, applied to all GEP courses, all in London, offers from Barts, Imperial and Georges GEP. Rejected from Kings.
I was really lucky!
I didnt do full time work experience, I did 1 day a week for about 8 months in a college for disabled young adults, one evening a week in a HIV support group, a month in a hospital in Zambia writing up a RCT and getting general experience and a month in HMP belmarsh doing psych stuff mainly. Also a week in my local a+e.
Good luck to anyone applying! Its worth it when you get offers.

The way I would suggest to find this information out properly (rather than potentially misleading single comments that may represent atypical admissions) is to go to open days and ask about how many people that fit your profile are admitted each year. I found this request was often given verbally in person, but never in writing.

Even then, still apply if you want to. I applied to one uni who initially told me I was ineligible on grounds of qualifications. I didn't understand why, so I requested that my CV was forwarded to the medic in charge of admissions who overturned the initial decision, but who also told me, informally (and via e-mail without ever talking to me), that I was unlikely to get an offer as I didn't fit their typical profile. Guess what? I got an offer.
