Question Centres for surgery.

OK this may sound like a dumb question, but are there any parts of the UK which are considered surgical centres in the UK.

Like where are the major centres for Neurosurgery and Cardiothoracic Surgery in the UK?

Anybody know?

I know for cardiology it is the Royal Brompton and Harefield (Imperial College) and for neurology it is the Institute of Neurology, Queens Square (UCL).

I'm sure others exist - these are probably the most famous though!

Southampton has Wessex Neuro Centre - they do regional neurosurg there. They also do cardiothoracics at Wessex Heartbeat in Southampton. My guess is most teaching hospitals have the regional units, but I could be wrong.

The Heart Hospital (UCL) is another big CT centre. The Royal Free is a big transplant centre, Stanmore (institute of orthopaedics, UCL) a major ortho centre.

Oh and there's St Mark's (Imperial College) for general and colorectal surgery.

The academic surgical unit is world renowned at St Mary's Hospital (Imperial College). They do all sorts with robots - and their head is none other than the Health Minister, Prof Lord Ara Darzi.

For hepatobiliary surgery there's the Hammersmith Hospital (Imperial College) and the Royal Free (UCL).

And at Addenbrooke's (Cambridge), they do great things with hearts I hear.
