National Medical Student Prize Night 2008 @ Imperial College

Imperial College School of Medicine Surgical Society is hosting its 2nd National Prize Night Evening on the 12th March 2008 and is welcoming abstract submissions for the event. If you’d like to make your CV shine and have the chance to win cash prizes then read on!
_______________________

PRECLINICAL STUDENTS:

Preclinical students are invited to submit a 250-word abstract on the following topic:

‘Describe the most important development in medical and/or surgical science in the last 25 years’

The best abstracts will be shortlisted. The authors of these abstracts will then be contacted and asked to produce an A1 poster on your chosen topic. You will be asked to submit the poster to us by Wednesday 5th March 2008. We will print poster for you free of charge and have it ready for you on the evening of the event.

On the night of the event, our eminent panel of judges, including Mr Barry Paraskeva and Dr Elizabeth Muir, will judge the posters.

CLINICAL STUDENTS:

Clinical students are invited to submit a 250 word abstract on an interesting clinical case that they have seen in the previous 12 months. The case can be taken from any medical or surgical specialty.

All authors are also asked to prepare a 10 minute powerpoint presentation on their chosen topic and bring it with them on the evening itself. The best 6 abstracts, as judged by our panel of senior clinicians, including Mr Barry Paraskeva, will be asked to present their case and answer questions from both the panel and the floor.
_______________________

Entry to the competition is free to ALL medical students in the UK and Ireland. The deadline for submission is Friday 8th February 2008 for the preclinical abstracts and Friday 15th February for the clinical abstracts.

Please submit your abstracts to surgical.soc@imperial.ac.uk along with your year of study and university.

This is a great opportunity to boost your CV and make it stand out, which is all too necessary these days, where medicine is becoming increasingly more competitive.

PRIZES:
The winner of each of the competitions will win a cash prize of £350 and runners-up will be awarded certificates of merit.

For more details please visit our website at www.surgicalsociety.org!

Good luck!

The deadline for submission of clinical abstracts has now passed. Thank you for the massive response you've shown in our event!

The event itself is taking place on the 12th March 2008 at the Reynolds Building, Charing Cross Campus, Imperial College London, Hammersmith, W6 8RP. Doors open at 18:00. Please ensure you arrive promptly if you have submitted an abstract.

The evening will also feature a key-note speech by Professor Nadey Hakim (Immediate Past World President of the International College of Surgeons and Surgical Director of the Transplant Unit at the Hammersmith Hospital) titled 'My Journey to Surgery'. It promises to be a great motivational speech, which comes just before a lot of us have to start revision for exams!

Best wishes,

ICSM Surgical Society
