Intercalating med student

Short thread!!!

I am an intercalating med student who has completed his 4th year in medicine at Manc. I just want to know, opinions of ppl who returned to medicine in their final year after an intercalation.

Would you say that you forgot a substantial amount of medicine in your year away and how hard was it to get it back. Did you just have to remind yourself of the missing facts.

Also, what proportion of medics fail there final year after intercalating as I understand that quite a few do.

Thank you 4 any responses

I cannot give you any figures, but i will say this. I intercalated after 3rd year. 4th year was tough, but it is all specialties in Leeds anyway, so my forgotten basic medicine knowledge was relatively unimportant. However, now in final year, and it is a bit of a joke. Its been 2.5 years since i did the general stuff and most of that information seems to have drained out of my head. However, it does appear to slowly be coming back.

That said, you do find that random things you learnt during your BSc are useful as the occasional trump card. The consultants cant really figure it out: "so let me get this straight... you know nothing about neck of femur fractures but can tell me, in intimate detail, how osteoclasts work?! thats ****ing useful"

I didnt find it a problem, infact I think the extra year of maturity and time-out of clinical experiences probably meant i was better equipped.

From my group of intercalators 1 failed finals out of I guess about 40.
