From my experience it can vary from firm to firm, but generally it's going to be 9-5 (or 8-5 for some specialties), with Wednesday afternoons off, and the occasional evenings, nights and weekends.

It can vary hugely. We don't get Wed afternoons off; that was only 1st-3rd year. I think it's mostly 8/9-4/5, but a friend of mine is doing 8-8s, some require you do nights or lates, etc etc. Consider a full-time job.

is there a number of set hours you can work a week. for example does the EU guidelines of 40/42hours a week apply for clinical years?

They only apply to employees, which students aren't.

Not that it really matters, as a student you wouldn't (and shouldn't) do that much.

Student nurses and physios actually work when they are on the wards, medical students don't. It is very variable. Its what you make of it. A lot of students are lazy and never turn up. But then again the standard of doctors are dropping fast.
