Can you take a break/year out after f2?

Hi guys,

I'm currently in fourth year and am beginning to wonder what the future holds. I'd always wanted to take some time out after med school but as this is no longer feasible is it possible to do the same after f2 has been completed.

Also when do we actually get registered these days. Is it after f1 or f2? I've seen many f1's walking round the ward with name badges that don't have dr infront of their name, yet sho's etc do. Kind off sucks really.

many thanks

Full registration on satisfactory completion of Foundation Year 1.

Dr on name badges - local policy. Nobody here has their title in front of their name. All badges in York are:

NAME
Job Title
Badge No. +/_ GMC No.

regardless of role.

You can call yourself Dr as soon as you graduate.

You then have provisional GMC registration until you complete F1 currently (there is a move to make this after F2 I believe). F2 is then completed before you go on to speciality training. You sign your life away for 2 years upon applying for a foundation school post and it's much easier to complete the 2 years than to take a year out after F1 and have to get back in the system as an F2 later.

After F2 is the ideal time to go for a break IMO. You have no contract to break. You can locum to supplement your income (good idea to get A&E experience in F2, preferably 6 months so you can get locums easily). You should then be able to slip back into the system after a year off without any problems (bearing in mind you might need to justify your commitment in view of year off).
